Saanane Island Day Tour

Saanane Island provides amazing views and sights of the lake, surrounding islands, greenery, and unique rock formations. Game viewing, bird watching, rock hiking (with well-marked walking and hiking trails), boat cruising, walking, picnics (a designated picnic area), bush lunches, photography, filming, meditation, and sport fishing are all excellent activities there. Impala, lizards, hyrax, zebras, crocodiles, and migrant bird species—more than 200 species have been identified here—are among the animals that can be seen here.

The park set a record for being the smallest national park in Tanzania and East Africa, as well as the first to be situated inside a city. Mammals like impalas, rock hyraxes, velvet monkeys, and wild cats can be found in the park. Its potential as the only park in the nation to house the species is highlighted by the presence of "De-brazas Monkey." Crocodiles, monitor lizards, agama lizards, pancake and leopard tortoises, and snakes, especially pythons, are among the reptiles that are also prevalent. Many fish species, primarily tilapia and nile perch, can be found in the park's aquatic area.

Mwanza can be reached by air or road from Kilimanjaro International Air Port or Dar es Salaam. To name a few, one can also go from Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Kigoma, and Tabora to Mwanza City by road or train. Additionally, people can take a ship or other vessel from Uganda, Kenya, Bukoba, and neighboring islands to Mwanza Port.

From the Park Offices on the mainland, it takes roughly five minutes to get to the Island by regular short boat ride. The Park Offices are conveniently located 15 minutes' walk from the City Center.

The island was renamed Saa Nane in honor of its former owner, Mzee Saanane Chawandi, a fisherman who became a farmer and then moved to another island (after receiving payment) to make room for conservation efforts in the early 1960s. In 1964, Tanzania became the first government-owned zoo when the island was formally taken over by the government. At first, it covered an area of about 0.7 square kilometers, which included both dry land and water. To increase its protected area to 1.32 square kilometers, Saa Nane National Park, however, annexed and included two additional smaller islets, Chankende Kubwa and Chandkende Ndogo, both of which are situated in the southern portion of the main island.

The dry season, which runs from June to October, is the ideal time of year to visit Saanane Island National Park because of the milder temperatures and lower rainfall. Wildlife tends to gather around water sources during this time, making it easier to spot them. It is crucial to remember that Saanane Island National Park is open year-round, with each season providing a different set of experiences.
