Embark on a 9-day Ngorongoro Highlands trek across diverse terrain—from Ngorongoro, Olmoti, and Empakaai to Lake Natron. Hike through volcanic landscapes, lush forests, and Maasai lands, with a chance to summit Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Mountain of God.
This 9-day trekking expedition immerses you in the strikingly varied terrains of the Ngorongoro Crater Highlands—spanning Ngorongoro, Olmoti, and Empakaai—before guiding you toward the remote beauty of Lake Natron. There, you’ll have the rare chance to ascend Ol Doinyo L’Engai, the revered “Mountain of God” as named by the Maasai people. The route meanders through some of the world’s most dramatic scenery, taking you across open highland meadows, rugged volcanic plains, dense montane forests, and the weathered savannahs of the Great Rift Valley. Beyond the extraordinary vistas and encounters with wildlife, this journey also offers a profound cultural connection with the Maasai communities who call this land home. It’s a powerful blend of natural wonder and authentic cultural discovery.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be welcomed and driven to your hotel in Moshi. Here, you’ll meet your trekking guide for a comprehensive briefing about the days ahead. The guide will also conduct an essential gear check to ensure safety and readiness. You’ll have time to settle in and relax at the lodge. The evening is perfect for resting after your journey. Tomorrow, the true adventure begins.
Depart in the morning for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, passing scenic highlands en route. Upon arrival, descend into the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater for a wildlife-filled game drive. Spot lions, elephants, and possibly black rhinos roaming the plains. After lunch, drive up the crater rim toward the secluded village of Nainokanoka. Settle into your first highland campsite. The fresh mountain air sets the tone for your trek.
Your trekking journey begins in earnest as you hike across rolling hills and vast open plains. The path leads through a mosaic of wild grasslands teeming with wildlife. Expect sightings of gazelles, wildebeest, zebras, and soaring raptors. The trail is peaceful and quiet, far from tourist crowds. Trekking takes approximately 5 hours, covering 16 kilometers. You’ll gain elevation and enjoy expansive views of the open terrain.
Begin the day by hiking past pastoral lands and into areas shaped by ancient volcanoes. The trail offers incredible vistas of Kilimanjaro, Meru, Olmoti, and Lolmasin. Reach the rim of Empakaai Crater, a beautiful caldera partly filled with a soda lake. Flamingos and other birds often feed along the shoreline. The cool air and stunning scenery make this a highlight of the trek. Sleep tonight at an elevation of 3,100 meters.
Descend into the Empakaai Crater via a well-kept trail surrounded by forest. At the bottom, explore the soda lake where flamingos gather in pink flocks year-round. Return to the crater rim and begin the hike out of Ngorongoro’s protected zone. The scenery grows drier as you head toward the open Rift Valley. This day covers approximately 13 kilometers over 5 hours. You’ll notice the vegetation and climate gradually change.
Today’s descent leads you down into the arid floor of the Great Rift Valley. The terrain is otherworldly, coated in ash from the 2007 eruption of Ol Doinyo L’Engai. Stunning views stretch across the valley to Lake Natron and the sacred mountain. After reaching the valley floor, vehicles transfer you a short distance to camp. In the afternoon, enjoy a refreshing hike to nearby waterfalls. Relax and prepare for the mountain climb ahead.
Shortly after midnight, begin the ascent of Ol Doinyo L’Engai, a sacred Maasai volcano. This steep climb demands stamina and determination, gaining over 2,000 meters in elevation. The summit rewards you with panoramic sunrise views over the Rift Valley. After descending, enjoy a hot brunch and rest at the camp. The total trek can take up to 14 hours, depending on pace. The remainder of the day is for recovery and reflection.
Begin the long drive back to Moshi, tracing your route through the Maasai lands and dusty plains. The journey is a scenic one, offering one last look at the Rift Valley’s unique landscapes. Along the way, stop for photos and picnic breaks at viewpoints. The transition from wild terrain to the comforts of Moshi is gradual. Arrive at your lodge by late afternoon. Enjoy your final evening back in town.
After breakfast, you’ll be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home. Alternatively, begin your next adventure in Tanzania with an optional safari or beach extension.
