Step-by-Step Itinerary

Step 1 • 7:00 AM – 8:00 AM

Hotel Pickup & Drive to Marangu Gate

Elevation: 900m to 1,840mDistance: 45 km drive

Your certified guide picks you up from your Moshi hotel. The scenic drive takes you through Chagga villages, coffee plantations, and banana groves with views of Kilimanjaro growing larger ahead.

Step 2 • 8:00 AM – 8:30 AM

Marangu Gate Registration

Elevation: 1,840m

Your guide handles park registration while you explore the garden entrance. Last chance for restroom stops. The trail begins right at the gate.

Step 3 • 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut (Ascent)

Elevation Gain: 1,840m to 2,700mDistance: 6 kmTime: 3–4 hrs

The trail winds through ancient montane rainforest. Towering camphor and podocarpus trees draped in usnea moss create a magical atmosphere. Listen for colobus monkeys and bird calls. The path crosses several small streams via log bridges and climbs steadily but gently. Your guide will point out endemic plants and explain the rainforest ecosystem.

Step 4 • 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

Lunch at Mandara Hut (2,700m)

Elevation: 2,700mRest: 45–60 min

Arrive at the historic Mandara Hut complex in a beautiful forest clearing. Enjoy your packed picnic lunch with views of Kibo peak visible on clear days. Restrooms available here. This is the turnaround point for the day hike.

Step 5 • 1:00 PM – 1:45 PM

Maundi Crater Side Trail (Optional)

Elevation: 2,700m to 2,780mDistance: 1 km round tripTime: 40 min

A short but rewarding side trail leads to the rim of Maundi Crater, an ancient volcanic crater. The panoramic view from the top is spectacular — a perfect photo opportunity before heading back.

Step 6 • 1:45 PM – 4:00 PM

Descent to Marangu Gate

Elevation Loss: 2,700m to 1,840mDistance: 6 kmTime: 2–3 hrs

Descend the same trail through the rainforest. The walk is faster downhill and you'll notice details you missed on the way up. Arrive at Marangu Gate where your driver awaits.

Step 7 • 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Return to Moshi Hotel

Arrival: 4:00–5:00 PM

Your guide drives you back to your Moshi hotel. The rest of the evening is yours to relax, explore Moshi town, or prepare for your next adventure.

What to Bring

Note: Lunch and drinking water are provided. Trekking poles available for rent. Wear layers — it's warm at the gate but cool in the forest shade.
