Detailed 6-Day Itinerary
Day-by-day breakdown of your 6-day budget overland safari experience.
Drive Time: Arusha → Tarangire is about 118 km (73 miles) — a scenic 2.5-hour drive across the Maasai steppe.
Morning: Meet your guide at your Arusha hotel or Kilimanjaro International Airport at around 8:00 AM. After a short safari orientation, you drive south-east across the Maasai steppe, passing traditional bomas and open acacia savannah.
Midday: Arrive at Tarangire National Park gate by late morning and begin your first game drive among the giant baobabs — some more than 1,000 years old. Tarangire is famous for Africa's largest elephant herds; watch as they gather at the Tarangire River, sometimes 300 strong.
Afternoon: Enjoy a picnic lunch beneath a giant baobab, then continue game driving past ancient elephant-feeding trees, termite mounds and seasonal swamps alive with zebra, wildebeest and gazelle.
Evening: Drive to your designated budget campsite near Mto wa Mbu for a chef-cooked dinner around the campfire under the stars.
- Signature sighting: Massed elephant herds gathering at the Tarangire River.
- Bird bonus: Yellow-collared lovebirds, hornbills, bateleur eagles and ground hornbills.
- Good to know: The park's name comes from the Tarangire River, the lifeblood that draws wildlife in the dry season.
Accommodation: Budget campsite near Mto wa Mbu
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Drive Time: Mto wa Mbu → Lake Manyara gate is just 15 km (9 miles) — a short 20-minute drive. The onward drive to Karatu is about 100 km (62 miles).
Morning: After breakfast, make the short drive to the Lake Manyara gate beneath the dramatic rift escarpment. Begin your game drive through the lush groundwater forest — Manyara's famous tree-climbing lions rest in the fig and mahogany branches.
Midday: Continue to the lakeshore where thousands of pink flamingos, pelicans and storks wade in the shallows — one of the most spectacular bird scenes in Africa.
Afternoon: Stop for a picnic lunch at a shady hippo pool, then enjoy a short game drive out through the acacia woodland before transferring to the Ngorongoro highlands.
Evening: Overnight at your budget campsite or lodge near Karatu, the friendly gateway to the crater.
- Signature sighting: Tree-climbing lions resting in the fig and mahogany branches.
- Bird bonus: Flamingos, yellow-billed storks, pelicans, crowned cranes and hornbills.
- Good to know: Manyara's groundwater forest stays lush and green all year round.
Accommodation: Budget campsite near Karatu
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Drive Time: Karatu → Naabi Hill Gate is roughly 160 km (99 miles) — about 3.5 to 4 hours including a lunch stop and park formalities.
Morning: After an early breakfast, drive up into the lush Ngorongoro Highlands, passing traditional Maasai bomas and sweeping crater views.
Midday: Enter the Serengeti at Naabi Hill Gate and enjoy a picnic lunch in the shade of a flat-topped acacia. Your first Serengeti game drive takes you across the golden short-grass plains.
Afternoon: Continue deeper into the central Serengeti (Seronera Valley), tracking lion, leopard and cheetah as the landscape opens into classic endless savannah.
Evening: Check in at your designated Serengeti campsite and enjoy a chef-cooked dinner around a crackling campfire under the vast African night sky.
- Signature sighting: Your first view of the Serengeti plains from Naabi Hill — a classic movie moment.
- Predator zone: Seronera's river valleys host Africa's densest population of lions, leopards and cheetahs.
- Good to know: Your guide tracks the Great Migration herds so you drive straight to the action.
Accommodation: Budget campsite inside the Serengeti
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Drive Time: No major transfers today — a full day of game driving across the Seronera Valley and surrounding plains.
Morning: Depart at sunrise for the best wildlife hours — when predators are at their most active before the heat of the day. Search for lion prides dozing on the granite kopjes, cheetahs on the termite mounds and leopards in the riverine fig trees.
Midday: Pause for a picnic lunch at a scenic spot — often beside a hippo pool or on a kopje overlook with the whole savannah laid out beneath you.
Afternoon: Continue game driving across the plains, tracking the Great Migration herds — wildebeest, zebra and gazelle — that your guide follows using radio reports and deep knowledge of seasonal movement.
Evening: Return to your Serengeti campsite for a delicious dinner around the campfire, followed by world-class stargazing.
- Full-day game drive: Up to 8 hours of game viewing across Seronera and the plains.
- Big Five chance: Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo — and sometimes rhino — are all possible.
- Photo tip: Pack a telephoto lens for the kopje predators and a wide-angle for the horizons.
Accommodation: Budget campsite inside the Serengeti
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Drive Time: Karatu → Ngorongoro Crater rim is about 40 km (25 miles) — roughly 1 hour of scenic highland driving.
Morning: Wake at 5:45 AM for an early breakfast, then ascend to the crater rim and descend the 600-metre (2,000 ft) crater wall at sunrise — a breathtaking start to the day.
Midday: The crater floor is home to more than 25,000 large animals, including the endangered black rhino, lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and hippo. Picnic lunch at the famous Hippo Pool.
Afternoon: Continue your game drive across the crater floor's open grassland, then ascend back up the wall and transfer to your campsite near Karatu.
Evening: Enjoy a celebratory dinner around the campfire, swapping stories of the animals you've seen.
- Signature sighting: The endangered black rhino — your best chance to tick the rarest of the Big Five.
- UNESCO Wonder: Ngorongoro was named a World Heritage Site for its extraordinary wildlife density.
- Photo tip: The open grassland makes superb wide-angle shots against the caldera walls.
Accommodation: Budget campsite near Karatu
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Drive Time: Karatu → Arusha is around 170 km (106 miles) — a relaxed 3 to 3.5-hour drive through the Rift Valley.
Morning: Enjoy a relaxed breakfast at the campsite, watching the highland birds and soaking in the last of the bush atmosphere.
Midday: Drive back to Arusha through the Great Rift Valley and the Maasai steppe, arriving in the early afternoon.
Afternoon: Continue to your Arusha hotel or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for onward travel.
- Extend your trip: Add a Zanzibar beach escape or combine with a Mount Kilimanjaro climb — our team will arrange it.
- Flight planning: We recommend booking flights no earlier than 3:00 PM on departure day.
- Good to know: Arusha's lively markets and the Cultural Heritage Centre are close by.

Meet Your Expert Safari Guide
Your guide is the difference between a good safari and a life-changing one.
Daniel Mrith — Kizza Adventures Safari Guide
"Jambo! I'm Daniel, born and raised at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in a small village called Moshi. I've been guiding safaris for over 10 years and I love showing travellers that a budget safari in Tanzania can be just as magical as an expensive one — especially with the full circuit in six days."
"My favourite moments always come at Serengeti sunrise — when a lion pride stirs on the kopjes and the whole plain rolls with wildebeest. Six days on this route and you never stop smiling"
"I know the Serengeti like home — where the elephants drink, where the leopards sleep in the fig trees, and where the migrating herds cross."
Comfortable Budget Camping
Sleep well for less across the whole circuit. Dome tents in designated bush camps and clean budget lodges at the main park gateways — the wildlife makes the memories, we make it affordable.
Budget Camping (Recommended)
A dome tent with roll-out mat, camp chair and the sounds of the African night — baboons barking, hyenas calling and hippos grunting across the plains. Meals are cooked by your camp chef over a fire, and evenings mean stargazing and storytelling under some of the darkest skies on Earth. The most authentic — and most affordable — way to safari.
Budget Lodge (Upgrade)
For a little more comfort choose a clean, cheerful budget lodge: a real room, en-suite hot shower, comfortable bed and reliable power to charge your gear. All the essentials done properly at a fraction of luxury rates — perfect after a full day of game driving.
Camps and lodges subject to availability. Shower & toilet facilities are provided at all registered campsites.
Your Safari Vehicle
Travel in a reliable, comfortable 4x4 Land Cruiser designed for the African bush — every seat a window seat.
Toyota Land Cruiser (Pop-Up Roof)
Our customized Toyota Land Cruiser pop-up roof gives 360-degree game viewing. Every seat is a window seat, and the vehicle fits up to 6 guests for affordability.
Charging Ports & Fridge
USB and 12V charging ports for cameras and devices. A cooler with bottled water and refreshments is restocked daily.
Binoculars & Field Guide
Each vehicle carries binoculars to share, wildlife reference books and bird guides to enrich every sighting.
Safety & Communication
First aid kit, safety equipment and reliable radio / satellite communication are always included.
Great Migration Month-by-Month Tracker
Your 6-day safari gives you a full day in the Serengeti. Here's where the Great Migration herds will be when you travel — and your guide tracks them live.
Your guide follows the herds by satellite and radio — your 6 safari days chase the migration wherever it is.
Safari Photography Guide
Capture Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater like a pro. Our guides are trained to help you get the shot.
Recommended Gear
A DSLR or mirrorless camera with a telephoto zoom (200-400mm or 100-400mm ideal) captures distant wildlife on the open plains. A wide-angle lens (16-35mm) is great for the crater rim and endless Serengeti landscapes. Spare batteries and memory cards are essential.
Golden Hour Magic
The best light is 6:00 - 8:30 AM and 4:30 - 6:30 PM. Your game drives are scheduled around these windows, with warm tones and long shadows for dramatic wildlife portraits.
Drone Regulations
Drones are strictly prohibited in Tanzanian national parks without special permits. Do not bring a drone — it will be confiscated at the airport. Professional aerial footage is available on request.
Guide Positioning
Your guide communicates with other guides by radio to share sightings and positions the vehicle at the optimal angle for light, composition and safety. Just ask to move for a better shot.
Vehicle Bean Bags
Each vehicle carries a window-mount bean bag for lens stabilisation — more effective than a tripod and ready in seconds when the action starts. A monopod is also available.
Protect Your Gear
Dust is the #1 enemy of camera equipment. Bring a blower, lens cloths and a dust cover. Use zip-lock bags for memory cards and batteries, and avoid changing lenses in open air.
What to Pack for Your Budget Camping Safari
Pack smart for six days of game drives and five nights under canvas — every item counts.
Essential Packing
- Soft-sided duffel bag (no hard suitcases)
- Lightweight neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, beige, olive)
- Warm fleece or jacket (mornings can be 8-15°C at the crater)

Essential Travel Tips for Tanzania
Everything you need to know before you arrive — visa, vaccines, money, SIM cards, and more.
Visa Requirements
Most nationalities require a visa for Tanzania. E-visa is available at visa.immigration.go.tz (apply 2+ weeks before travel). Visa on arrival is also available at JRO/NBO airports — $50 USD for most nationalities. Check your country's specific requirements.
Health & Vaccinations
A Yellow Fever certificate is required if travelling from an endemic country. Recommended: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus and routine vaccinations. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended — consult your doctor 4-6 weeks before travel.
Travel Insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory. It must cover medical evacuation, trip cancellation, baggage loss and emergency repatriation. We recommend World Nomads, SafetyWing or your local provider, and can advise on adequate coverage.
Money & Tipping
USD is widely accepted. Carry small bills ($1, $5, $10, $20) for tips and incidentals. ATMs are available in Arusha but unreliable in safari areas. Recommended tipping: guide $15-25/day, cook $8-12/day. Credit cards are accepted at most lodges.
SIM Cards & Internet
Buy a local SIM at JRO airport arrivals or in Arusha. Vodacom and Airtel have the best coverage in safari areas. 10GB of data costs about $10. Campsite WiFi is limited, so download offline maps before you travel.
Tipping Culture & Etiquette
Tanzania has a tipping culture — not mandatory but appreciated, as guides rely on tips for a significant part of their income. Tip guideline: guide $15-25/day, cook $8-12/day, camp staff $3-5/day.
Honeymoon & Family Safari Options
Make your budget camping safari extra special with tailored experiences for couples and families.
Honeymoon Budget Safari
Celebrate your honeymoon on a shoestring without skimping on romance. Sunset sundowners over the plains, a private bush breakfast on the migration route, and a sunrise descent into the Ngorongoro Crater with a champagne picnic at the Hippo Pool.
Special honeymoon inclusions: welcome drink on arrival, a private candlelit campfire dinner, and a complimentary upgrade to the best available tent at the campsite (subject to availability).
From $350/person — honeymoon add-ons priced on request

This safari is ideal for families with children aged 6+. Children are fascinated by the wildlife, and our guides are experienced in engaging young adventurers with stories, games and binocular tricks.
Children's activities include: junior ranger programs, wildlife sketching, animal tracking lessons, Maasai beadwork and stargazing sessions. Children under 12 receive a 40% discount on the adult rate. Children under 6 can join private safaris in our vehicle.

Four Parks, One Complete Circuit
The elephant capital, the lion kingdom, the endless plains and the crater — each park brings something different to your 6 days.
Tarangire National Park
Africa's elephant capital — herds of up to 300 beneath ancient baobab trees, plus 550+ bird species.
Lake Manyara National Park
A Rift Valley jewel famous for tree-climbing lions and thousands of pink flamingos.
Serengeti National Park
The endless plains — the world's greatest wildlife spectacle, with a full day chasing the Great Migration.
Ngorongoro Crater
The world's largest intact volcanic caldera and a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the most reliable Big Five.
When to Visit on a Budget
Every season on this circuit has its magic — pick the window that matches your wildlife priorities and your budget.
Jun–Oct — Dry Season
The classic safari window. Wildlife masses around water sources and river crossings peak on the Grumeti and Mara. The best all-round Big Five viewing.
Jan–Mar — Calving Season
Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves in the southern Serengeti, with predators never far behind. Warm weather and dramatic predator action.
Apr–May — Green Season
Lush landscapes, fewer crowds and the lowest budget rates of the year. Some rain but plenty of sunshine — the most affordable window.
Nov–Dec — Short Rains
Good resident wildlife, fewer vehicles and affordable rates as the short rains refresh the parks and the herds begin their southern journey.
