13-Day Best of Kenya & Tanzania Safari

Experience the best of Kenya and Tanzania on one grand extended group-joining safari from Nairobi to Arusha.

This 13-day journey combines some of East Africa's most iconic wildlife destinations, beginning in Kenya's Maasai Mara before continuing to Lake Nakuru and Amboseli. After crossing into Tanzania via Namanga, the safari continues through Arusha to Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

The extra time compared with shorter Kenya–Tanzania itineraries allows a more complete journey, with dedicated wildlife days in the Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Lake Manyara and Serengeti rather than treating every destination as a rapid transfer stop.

This two-country route is designed for travellers who want a broader East African safari experience while sharing the cost of transportation and guiding with fellow travelers.

  • Seven major wildlife destinations across two countries
  • Namanga border crossing with guide assistance
  • Shared 4x4 safari with professional guide
  • Ngorongoro Crater descent & wildlife exploration

Detailed 13-Day Kenya & Tanzania Safari Itinerary

Nairobi → Maasai Mara → Lake Nakuru → Amboseli → Namanga → Arusha → Tarangire → Serengeti → Ngorongoro → Arusha

1
Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi
Nairobi Arrival & Safari Briefing
+

Arrival in Nairobi and transfer to the designated hotel/accommodation.

Meet the safari representative and prepare for the following day's journey into the Maasai Mara. Your guide will provide a safari briefing covering the 13-day route, vehicle logistics, park rules and daily rhythm.

Focus: Arrival, safari briefing, rest, preparation.

Overnight: Nairobi — confirmed hotel/accommodation.

Meals: According to the confirmed package.

2
Day 2: Nairobi → Maasai Mara National Reserve
Nairobi → Maasai Mara
+

Morning departure (07:30–08:30): Depart Nairobi and travel through Kenya's Great Rift Valley toward the Maasai Mara.

Journey: Nairobi → farmland → rural settlements → Great Rift Valley viewpoint → Narok → Maasai Mara. Depending on timing, include a scenic viewpoint stop at the Rift escarpment. Drive approximately 5–6 hours excluding stops.

First game drive: Enter Maasai Mara National Reserve for afternoon wildlife viewing when time permits.

Possible wildlife: Lion, elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, gazelle, hyena, cheetah, leopard.

Overnight: Maasai Mara camp/lodge — confirmed property.

Meals: Lunch en route, dinner at camp.

3
Day 3: Full-Day Maasai Mara Wildlife Safari
Full-Day Maasai Mara
+

Full day exploring the Maasai Mara reserve.

Morning focus: Sunrise drive targeting lion prides, cheetahs, leopards, elephants and buffalo across open plains, acacia groves and riverine habitats.

Wildlife opportunities:

  • Predators: Lions, cheetahs, leopards
  • Large herbivores: Elephants, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe
  • River and wetland wildlife: Hippos, crocodiles, water-associated birds

Great Migration note: During the migration season, the Mara can host large concentrations of wildebeest and other migrating animals, but the precise location of herds and river crossings cannot be guaranteed.

Why this extra day: The 13-day format gives Maasai Mara genuine depth, making predator tracking, herd observation and photography far richer than a single-visit stop.

Overnight: Maasai Mara camp/lodge. All meals included.

4
Day 4: Maasai Mara → Lake Nakuru National Park
Maasai Mara → Lake Nakuru
+

Morning departure: Enjoy an early Mara game drive where operationally practical, then return for breakfast and checkout.

Drive to Lake Nakuru: Travel through Kenya's highland farmland, Rift escarpment landscapes and rural communities. Possible scenic stops at the Great Rift Valley region.

Lake Nakuru game drive: Explore the park's woodland, grassland and lake shore.

Wildlife opportunities: Rhino, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, waterbuck, baboon, birdlife. Flamingos are seen when lake conditions allow. Lake Nakuru is a key rhino and birding destination.

Overnight: Lake Nakuru / Nakuru area — confirmed property.

Meals: Breakfast in Mara, lunch en route, dinner at camp.

5
Day 5: Lake Nakuru → Amboseli National Park
Lake Nakuru → Amboseli
+

Morning Nakuru: Where schedule allows, a short morning game drive for remaining rhino/birdlife viewing before breakfast.

Long transfer south: Travel toward Amboseli through southern Kenya. This is a transfer-heavy day, and the page should be honest about it. Lunch is arranged en route. Drive approximately 7–8 hours excluding stops.

Amboseli arrival: Approach the Amboseli ecosystem; on clear days Mount Kilimanjaro dominates the horizon — weather can hide it. A short game drive where time permits for elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, lions and hippos.

Overnight: Amboseli area — confirmed property.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

6
Day 6: Full-Day Amboseli — Elephants Beneath Kilimanjaro
Full-Day Amboseli
+

Sunrise drive: Depart early for wetlands, open plains and acacia woodland. Amboseli is famed for large elephant herds beneath Kilimanjaro.

Wildlife & ecology: Elephants, lions, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, hyena, hippo and abundant birdlife around seasonal swamps. Your guide explains water availability and elephant movement patterns.

Main visual themes: African elephants, Mount Kilimanjaro, open savannah, birdlife, wetlands.

Kilimanjaro photography: Possible compositions include elephants with Kilimanjaro, savannah with mountain, sunrise with wildlife — only when visibility allows. Mount Kilimanjaro views depend on atmospheric conditions and cloud cover, so don't promise a clear mountain view every day.

Overnight: Amboseli area — confirmed property.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

7
Day 7: Amboseli → Namanga Border → Arusha
Amboseli → Namanga → Arusha
+

Final Amboseli moments: Where timing allows, a last short drive for elephants, hippos, giraffes and birdlife before breakfast and checkout.

Documents check: Confirm passport, visa documentation, travel insurance and booking voucher are accessible — not in stored luggage.

Drive to Namanga: Transfer to the Kenya–Tanzania border. Process: Exit Kenya → Immigration → Entry into Tanzania → Continue to Arusha. Waiting time varies; keep documents at hand.

Cross-border information:

  • Departure from Amboseli
  • Travel to Namanga border post
  • Border formalities: passport, applicable visa, immigration processing
  • Potential waiting time at the border
  • Vehicle arrangements may change at the border
  • Luggage transfer between vehicles if applicable

Important: Entry requirements depend on nationality and current rules. Border officers control processing times.

Overnight: Arusha — confirmed hotel/accommodation.

Meals: Breakfast in Amboseli, lunch at border/travel point, dinner per Arusha arrangement.

8
Day 8: Arusha → Tarangire National Park
Arusha → Tarangire
+

Depart Arusha for Tarangire National Park.

Journey: Arusha → Maasai steppe → Tarangire. Drive approximately 2–3 hours. Tarangire gives the page a very different ecosystem from the Mara and Amboseli.

Signature themes: Baobabs, elephants, Tarangire River, open woodland, seasonal wildlife concentrations.

Wildlife: Elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, lions, warthogs, antelope, birdlife.

Why Tarangire matters: This is a sensible 13-day expansion. Current market 13-day Kenya–Tanzania shared itineraries also insert Tarangire between Arusha and Serengeti. The park's distinctive baobab landscape and elephant concentrations give this itinerary its own reason to exist.

Overnight: Tarangire area — confirmed property.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

9
Day 9: Tarangire → Lake Manyara National Park
Tarangire → Lake Manyara
+

Morning Tarangire: Where schedule allows, a final game drive for elephants, baobabs and the park's signature wildlife before breakfast and checkout.

Drive to Lake Manyara: Continue north past the edge of the Ngorongoro highlands to Lake Manyara National Park. Travel time roughly 3–4 hours with stops, depending on route and road conditions.

Lake Manyara game drive: Explore the park's groundwater forest, woodland and lake shore. Manyara is known for its tree-climbing lions (never guaranteed), large baboon troops and spectacular birdlife.

Wildlife opportunities: Elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, baboons, blue monkeys and a huge variety of birds including flamingos when lake conditions allow.

Signature theme: The soda lake and escarpment setting give Manyara a distinct feel from Tarangire and the open plains to come.

Overnight: Lake Manyara / Karatu area — confirmed property.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

10
Day 10: Lake Manyara → Serengeti National Park
Manyara → Serengeti
+

Travel from Lake Manyara toward the Serengeti.

Journey highlights: A spectacular landscape-transition day. Manyara → Great Rift Valley region → Ngorongoro Conservation Area → open Serengeti plains → first Serengeti game viewing.

Afternoon: Game drive as time and park access permit.

Possible wildlife: Lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, hyenas.

Overnight: Serengeti — confirmed camp/lodge.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch en route, dinner at camp.

11
Day 11: Full-Day Serengeti National Park Safari
Full-Day Serengeti
+

Full Serengeti safari day: Explore the central Serengeti with morning and afternoon game drives. Your guide adapts the route to wildlife sightings, season and camp location.

Wildlife: Lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, hyenas, hippos, crocodiles and extensive plains game. Focus on large plains, predator territory, kopjes, water sources and resident wildlife.

Great Migration: During the relevant season, the Serengeti may offer opportunities to witness stages of the Great Migration depending on the animals' location at the time of travel. No river-crossing guarantee.

Photography: Excellent opportunities for wildlife and landscape photography, subject to light, weather and wildlife behavior.

Overnight: Serengeti — second Serengeti night. All meals included.

12
Day 12: Serengeti → Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Serengeti → Ngorongoro
+

Extended Serengeti morning: Begin with a substantial Serengeti game drive covering tracks, predator signs, herd movement and water sources.

Wildlife: Lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, hyena, gazelle and birdlife.

Picnic lunch during the exploration.

Optional Olduvai Gorge: Where included as an optional activity, discuss paleoanthropology, fossils, stone tools and Rift Valley context.

Afternoon: Leave Serengeti and ascend toward the Ngorongoro highlands — plains → woodland → highlands → Ngorongoro.

Overnight: Ngorongoro area — confirmed property.

Meals: All meals included.

13
Day 13: Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha
Ngorongoro → Arusha
+

Early breakfast before descending into Ngorongoro Crater.

Crater exploration: The crater offers a remarkable concentration of wildlife in a comparatively compact ecosystem. Traverse grasslands, wetlands, lake habitats, woodland and rocky areas.

Wildlife possibilities: Lion, buffalo, elephant, zebra, wildebeest, hippo, hyena, gazelle, birdlife, black rhinoceros — genuine opportunity but never guaranteed.

Picnic lunch at a permitted crater location, then final game drive before ascending.

Ascent & transfer: Leave the crater and drive toward Arusha with possible Rift Valley and Karatu highland views.

End point: Arusha. Drop-off in Arusha, at Kilimanjaro International Airport or other confirmed endpoint.

Potential onward travel: Arusha hotel, Kilimanjaro International Airport, Zanzibar extension, further safari. Only advertise transfers/extensions Kizza actually provides.

Meals: Breakfast Ngorongoro, picnic lunch crater, dinner not normally included unless extension.

Why Choose This Safari

Why Choose the 13-Day Kenya & Tanzania Safari?

Two countries. Seven iconic wildlife destinations. One unforgettable East African safari. Here's why this 13-day route stands out.

Two Countries in One Journey

Experience both Kenya and Tanzania instead of limiting the trip to one country's parks. This 13-day route connects the best of both nations.

Six Major Wildlife Destinations

Maasai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Amboseli, Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro — each with distinct ecosystems and wildlife.

Three Distinct Iconic Experiences

Mara wildlife. Kilimanjaro + Amboseli elephants. Serengeti + Ngorongoro + Tarangire — the most complete East Africa safari.

Extended Safari Duration

13 days allows the itinerary to breathe rather than rushing between destinations. More time in each park means richer wildlife encounters.

Group-Joining Value

Shared safari transport and guide costs can make a two-country safari more accessible to independent travelers.

Tarangire Differentiator

The addition of Tarangire and Lake Manyara gives this 13-day itinerary its own identity — baobab landscapes and elephant concentrations unique to this route.

"Jambo! I'm Daniel, born and raised at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in a small village called Moshi. I still get excited every time I enter the Serengeti.

My most memorable sighting? Last July, we watched a cheetah mother teach her three cubs to hunt on the Serengeti plains "” it took over two hours, and by the end there wasn't a dry eye in the vehicle. These are the moments a guide book can't prepare you for.

I know the Serengeti like my backyard "” where the lions are resting at 10 AM, where the leopards hunt at dusk, and where the migration will be based on the last rains. Let me show you the Tanzania I grew up loving."

Seasonal Highlights

The Great Migration & Best Time to Visit

The Serengeti ecosystem changes dramatically throughout the year. Here's when to go and what to expect.

The Great Migration "” Nature's Greatest Spectacle

The Great Migration involves over 1.5 million wildebeest, 400,000 zebras, and 200,000 gazelles moving in a continuous cycle across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. This Kenya and Tanzania route includes both Maasai Mara and Serengeti ecosystems, where wildlife movements vary by season.

December"“March: Calving season in the southern Serengeti (Ndutu area). Thousands of calves born daily. Predator action is at its peak.

April"“May: Migration moves through central Serengeti. Long rains "” fewer crowds, lush landscapes, lower rates.

June"“October: Dry season. Migration concentrates in northern Serengeti. River crossings at Grumeti and Mara Rivers "” the most dramatic wildlife viewing of the year.

November: Short rains. Migration moves south. Good wildlife viewing with fewer tourists.

We track the migration in real-time and adjust your itinerary to be where the animals are.

Photography Tips

Safari Photography Guide

Capture the Serengeti like a pro. Our guides are trained to help you get the shot.

Recommended Gear

DSLR or mirrorless with a telephoto zoom (200-400mm or 100-400mm ideal). A wide-angle (16-35mm) for landscapes and camp shots. Spare batteries and memory cards are essential "” charging available at all lodges.

Golden Hour Magic

The best light is 6:00"“8:30 AM and 4:30"“6:30 PM. Our game drives are scheduled around these windows. The low angle creates warm tones, long shadows, and dramatic wildlife portraits.

Drone Regulations

Drones are strictly prohibited in Tanzanian national parks without special permits. Do not bring a drone "” it will be confiscated at the airport. We offer professional aerial footage upon request (pre-arranged).

Guide Positioning

Our guides communicate with each other via radio to share sightings. They position the vehicle at the optimal angle for light, composition, and safety. Don't hesitate to ask your guide to move the vehicle for a better shot.

Vehicle Bean Bags

Each vehicle has a window-mount bean bag for lens stabilization. This is more effective than a tripod and allows quick setup when the action is happening. We also carry a monopod in the vehicle.

Protect Your Gear

Dust is the #1 enemy of camera equipment. Bring a camera dust blower, lens cleaning cloths, and a rain cover (dust cover). Zip-lock bags for memory cards and batteries. Avoid changing lenses in open air when possible.
