River country on a 5-day Serengeti game drive safari
Tour Overview

The Full Range of Serengeti Ground

The five-day game drive takes the classic central circuit and reaches west into the Western Corridor — the Grumeti river country where herds and crocodiles gather in season. Nine drive windows span all three zones, the longest pure drive route we run.

Each zone brings different habitat, different species ground and a different rhythm to the day. Wildlife stays an honest variable; the five-day's guarantee is range, guiding and four confirmed nights, all written down before travel.

  • Nine 4x4 game drive windows
  • Central Serengeti, kopjes and Western Corridor
  • Four nights in confirmed camps or lodges
  • Private vehicle or shared group, confirmed
  • Road transfer from Arusha and back
Quick Facts

The 5-Day Game Drive Safari at a Glance

Nine drive windows and four confirmed nights take the game drive across the full range of Serengeti ground — central, kopjes and the Western Corridor's river country — all confirmed on paper before travel.

Day-by-Day Plan

Five Days, Three Zones of Driving

Two central days, a kopje day, the move west into the Corridor and a closing morning window — the full-range frame.

1
Arusha to the Central Serengeti and Afternoon Game Drive
Arusha → Central Serengeti
+

The road crosses the highlands and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area boundary onto the plains; fly-in guests meet the vehicle at the Seronera airstrip. A paced start keeps the first afternoon window usable.

The opening game drive works the Seronera riverine and grassland country — lions, riverine figs, elephant water lines — on the wild's own schedule.

Dinner and the first night in a confirmed camp or lodge close the day. Every overnight, like the vehicle and meals, is on paper at booking.

2
Full Day of Dawn and Dusk Central Drives
Central Serengeti
+

Pre-dawn departure for the first drive block while the light is low and the hunters are moving; the water lines and open ridges of the central ground are the classic first-hour finds.

A mid-morning stop keeps the day productive through the hot hours — food, rest and shade to the confirmed meal plan.

The dusker sets out as the light turns golden once more, reading the day's sightings and the season for its line. Dinner and a second confirmed night on the plains.

3
Kopje Country and Waterhole Drives
Central Serengeti, Moru and Waterhole Country
+

The line shifts to the Moru kopjes and the waterhole ground — granite outcrops, resident leopards and the pools where elephant and buffalo gather through the day.

Two drive blocks bracket a mid-day pause as on the central day, the exact course flexing with morning sightings, weather and park access.

The zone's different habitat rounds out the viewing against the central ground. Back to camp or lodge for dinner and the third confirmed night.

4
Western Corridor: Drive to the Grumeti River Country
Central Serengeti → Western Corridor
+

The driving day heads west into the Western Corridor, paced to arrive with game-drive hours still in the afternoon. The Grumeti river country is the classic western ground for season herds and its own predator cast.

An afternoon drive block reads the riverine and woodland habitat once the vehicle is positioned — how far west the day reaches depends on the season, the roads and the access confirmed on your dates.

Dinner and the fourth night at a confirmed camp or lodge in the Corridor line, the westernmost overnight of the route.

5
Morning Game Drive and Return to Arusha
Western Corridor → Arusha
+

A last early block in the western country — the final leaves of the Corridor before the long road east begins.

The return crosses the plains, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the highlands toward Arusha, with picnic stops and gate formalities along the way. Journey time follows roads, season and stoppages — planned, never promised to the hour.

Arrival in Arusha lands you late afternoon, with onward connections or a town overnight your own arrangement. End of the 5-day route.

My most memorable sighting? Last July, we watched a cheetah mother teach her three cubs to hunt on the Serengeti plains "” it took over two hours, and by the end there wasn't a dry eye in the vehicle. These are the moments a guide book can't prepare you for.

The Road Journey

Getting to the Serengeti by Road

Most safari companies don't explain logistics. We believe in full transparency. Here is how game drive roads really work on the ground.

Distance & Drive Times

Arusha to the Serengeti gate is a full-day transfer with picnic stops; drive time is confirmed for your season and road conditions.

4x4 Safari Vehicles

Each game drive has a route line chosen for the season's light and wildlife — the guide adjusts it daily to where the sightings sit.

Roadside Picnic Stops

Meal timing is slotted around the golden-hour drives so nothing is wasted and nothing arrives cold.

Safety & Road Conditions

Park roads are dry-season dirt tracks; your driver keeps to safe routes and adjusts for weather and conditions.

Meet Your Driver-Guide

Your driver-guide coordinates sites, camp teams and meal timings across the whole route.

What Happens Along the Way

Special requests — dietary, celebratory or quiet — are noted at booking and confirmed on the day plan.

Your Safari Vehicle

Safari Vehicle

Vehicle WiFi (Select Areas)

Complimentary WiFi is available in lodge areas and most park gates. Our vehicles carry portable hotspots where coverage is available, so you can share your safari moments live.

Complimentary Drinks & Snacks

Stay hydrated with bottled water, soft drinks, beer, and wine. Snacks include nuts, biscuits, fresh fruit, and local treats — restocked throughout your drives.

Seasonal Highlights

The Great Migration & Best Time to Visit

The Serengeti ecosystem changes dramatically throughout the year. Here's when to go and what to expect.

The Great Migration "” Nature's Greatest Spectacle

The Great Migration involves over 1.5 million wildebeest, 400,000 zebras, and 200,000 gazelles moving in a continuous cycle across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Travel during migration periods and your guide can plan game-viewing around current wildlife movements, subject to natural conditions and the location of the herds on your travel dates.

December"“March: Calving season in the southern Serengeti (Ndutu area). Thousands of calves born daily. Predator action is at its peak.

April"“May: Migration moves through central Serengeti. Long rains "” fewer crowds, lush landscapes, lower rates.

June"“October: Dry season. Migration concentrates in northern Serengeti. River crossings at Grumeti and Mara Rivers "” the most dramatic wildlife viewing of the year.

November: Short rains. Migration moves south. Good wildlife viewing with fewer tourists.

Guides plan around current wildlife movements, subject to natural conditions and herd locations on your travel dates.

Photography Tips

Safari Photography Guide

Capture the Serengeti like a pro. Our guides are trained to help you get the shot.

Recommended Gear

DSLR or mirrorless with a telephoto zoom (200-400mm or 100-400mm ideal). A wide-angle (16-35mm) for landscapes and camp shots. Spare batteries and memory cards are essential "” charging available at all lodges.

Golden Hour Magic

The best light is 6:00"“8:30 AM and 4:30"“6:30 PM. Our game drives are scheduled around these windows. The low angle creates warm tones, long shadows, and dramatic wildlife portraits.

Drone Regulations

Drones are strictly prohibited in Tanzanian national parks without special permits. Do not bring a drone "” it will be confiscated at the airport. We offer professional aerial footage upon request (pre-arranged).

Guide Positioning

Our guides communicate with each other via radio to share sightings. They position the vehicle at the optimal angle for light, composition, and safety. Don't hesitate to ask your guide to move the vehicle for a better shot.

Vehicle Bean Bags

Each vehicle has a window-mount bean bag for lens stabilization. This is more effective than a tripod and allows quick setup when the action is happening. We also carry a monopod in the vehicle.

Protect Your Gear

Dust is the #1 enemy of camera equipment. Bring a camera dust blower, lens cleaning cloths, and a rain cover (dust cover). Zip-lock bags for memory cards and batteries. Avoid changing lenses in open air when possible.

Travel Information

Essential Travel Tips for Tanzania

Everything you need to know before you arrive "” visa, vaccines, money, SIM cards, and more.

Visa Requirements

Most nationalities require a visa for Tanzania. E-visa available at visa.immigration.go.tz (apply 2+ weeks before travel). Visa on arrival also available at JRO/NBO airports "” $50 USD for US citizens, $50 for most others. Check your country's specific requirements.

Health & Vaccinations

Yellow Fever certificate required if travelling from an endemic country. Recommended: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus, and routine vaccinations. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended "” consult your doctor 4-6 weeks before travel.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory. Must cover medical evacuation, trip cancellation, baggage loss, and emergency repatriation. We recommend World Nomads, SafetWing, or your local provider. We do not sell insurance but can advise on adequate coverage.

Money & Tipping

USD is widely accepted. Carry small bills ($1, $5, $10, $20) for tips and incidentals. ATMs available in Arusha but unreliable in safari areas. Recommended tipping: guide $20-30/day, cook $10-15/day. Credit cards accepted at lodges (3-5% surcharge).

SIM Cards & Internet

Buy a local SIM at JRO airport arrivals or in Arusha. Vodacom and Airtel have the best coverage in safari areas. 10GB data costs ~$10. Lodge WiFi is available but can be slow in remote areas. WhatsApp works well throughout most of the Serengeti.

Tipping Culture & Etiquette

Tanzania has a tipping culture. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated. Safari guides rely on tips as a significant part of their income. Tipping guideline: Safari guide $20-30 per person per day. Lodge staff $5-10 per day. Use the lodge tip box for general staff.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Five-day game drive safari questions answered honestly — drives, nights, vehicles and how booking works.

What does a 5-day game drive safari cover?+
A road safari based around guided 4x4 game drives in the Serengeti: transfers from Arusha, accommodation in a confirmed camp or lodge, and drive time in the classic wildlife zones. The whole plan is confirmed on paper at booking.
How many game drives are included on the 5-day?+
Roughly nine drive windows across the five days — drive numbers flex with light, roads and sightings, and the exact day-by-day drive plan is confirmed before you travel.
Are dawn drives worth it on a 5-day?+
Yes — the first hours of light are when predators are most active and the plains are empty of other vehicles. On a five-day every dawn window earns its place in the plan.
Will I see the Big Five on the 5-day?+
The central Serengeti is classic big-species ground, so lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo are regular finds, but the wild keeps the final say — nothing is ever guaranteed on the five-day.
How many people share the vehicle on a game drive?+
Private routes use your own vehicle; shared routes group a handful of travellers. The exact setup for your five-day dates is confirmed at booking.
Do we stay inside the vehicle during the drives?+
Yes — you stay in the vehicle for the drives, which is the park-standard safety practice and the least disturbing way to watch the animals.
Can we stop anywhere on the game drive?+
Only at safe, lawful points. Your guide picks the stops — scenic overlooks, picnic spots and anywhere a sighting demands a pause.
Is a picnic lunch included on the 5-day drive days?+
On full drive days yes — a shaded picnic stop at a safe, lawful spot arranged by your guide, per the confirmed meal plan for the five-day.
Do night drives happen on the 5-day?+
No — night driving is not permitted in Serengeti National Park. Gates and camps control access after dark as a safety rule for everyone.
Which season is best for a 5-day game drive?+
Wildlife concentrates around water and fresh grass in different months, so central Seronera works year-round while other zones favour specific seasons. We advise for your five-day dates honestly.
Is lunch included in the price for the 5-day?+
Meals follow the confirmed plan — breakfast and dinner at camp or lodge, and picnic lunch on full drive days. No meal line is left to guesswork on the five-day.
Can a 5-day game drive itinerary add Ngorongoro Crater?+
Yes — the crater floor drive is the classic add-on and pairs easily with any game drive route, quoted against your five-day dates.
Do I need binoculars on the 5-day?+
They help, especially for distant predators. Bring your own or use the pair kept in the vehicle — both are fine on the five-day.
What should I wear for a game drive?+
Neutral colours, long sleeves for dawn and dusk, a hat and sunscreen. Comfort layers beat safari fashion every time.
Where do we sleep on the 5-day?+
In a confirmed camp, tented camp or lodge inside or beside the drive zone, named on paper at booking — not assumed and not switched without notice.
How far is the drive from Arusha on the 5-day?+
The road runs via the Ngorongoro Conservation Area boundary and takes most of a travel day; fly-in guests instead meet the vehicle at the Seronera airstrip.
Is the game drive vehicle private on the 5-day?+
It is private when your booked route says so — the vehicle arrangement is one of the lines confirmed in writing before the five-day begins.
Can children join the 5-day game drive safari?+
Yes — drives suit families well, with short attention-friendly legs, gentle stopping and guides experienced with younger travellers.
Is a 5-day trip enough time for the Serengeti?+
It is a focused taste of the central plains — ideal for first-timers with limited dates. Guests wanting more depth can extend into a longer drive route.
Can we fly into the 5-day instead of driving from Arusha?+
Yes — scheduled flights land at Seronera airstrip and the vehicle meets you there; the routing is confirmed against your flight times at booking.
What is not included on the 5-day?+
International flights, visa fees, travel insurance, premium drinks, tips, personal items and optional excursions are quoted separately.
What if wildlife doesn't show on a drive?+
It happens in a wild place. The guide repositions and tries different habitat, and the hours spent in good ground usually reward patience — no drive outcome is ever promised.
How is the 5-day price set?+
Price on request — your quote is itemised by drives, nights, meals and park fees for the party size and dates you give us.
What should we pack beyond clothes?+
Camera or phone for the drives, binoculars, a light layer for dawn and dusk, sunscreen, repellent and a soft duffel — the full list is on the packing section.
How do I book the 5-day?+
Message us on WhatsApp or email with your dates and party size — we return a written itinerary, accommodation and price before any commitment.
