The Crater Rewards the First Descent
By 9am the crater floor is busy with vehicles; by 6:05am it is yours. The single most important decision on a Ngorongoro day is being first down the descent lane. Have your picnic packed the night before, camp coffee on your roster and persuade the lodge to load you at first light. The reward is the circuit's great wildlife hour — lions still on the marsh, rhinos crossing between waterholes — before the day's convoy arrives.

Dust is the #1 enemy of camera equipment. Bring a camera dust blower, lens cleaning cloths, and a rain cover (dust cover). Zip-lock bags for memory cards and batteries. Avoid changing lenses in open air when possible.

Visa Requirements
Most nationalities require a visa for Tanzania. E-visa available at visa.immigration.go.tz (apply 2+ weeks before travel). Visa on arrival also available at JRO/NBO airports — $50 USD for US citizens, $50 for most others. Check your country's specific requirements.
Health & Vaccinations
Yellow Fever certificate required if travelling from an endemic country. Recommended: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus, and routine vaccinations. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended — consult your doctor 4-6 weeks before travel.
