Newborn calves steal every eye, but the mothers write the day's script: a wildebeest cow that suddenly stares fixed in one direction has spotted a hunter you haven't. Keep binoculars on herd behaviour, not individuals — heads rising in waves, shoulders bunching, dust kicking up in lines all telegraph the next ten minutes. Photographers: shoot wide first for the scale of it all, then go long for faces. The calves will still be wobbling when you look back.
