The History & Discovery of Mount Kilimanjaro
Indigenous Legends
Long before any European laid eyes on Kilimanjaro, the Chagga people who lived at its base called it Kibo or Kilima Njaro — meaning "Mountain of Caravans" or "That Which Defeats the Caravan." They believed the snow-capped peak was the home of powerful spirits and gods, and only the bravest warriors would venture into its middle slopes. The mountain was a sacred landmark, woven into creation myths and oral traditions that spoke of a great white mountain that touched the sky.
The First European to See Kilimanjaro — Johannes Rebmann
German missionary Johannes Rebmann became the first European to report seeing the snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro on May 11, 1848. While traveling through the region from his mission station in Rabai, near Mombasa, Rebmann glimpsed a white shimmer on the horizon. When he described a mountain with snow at the equator, the geographical community in Europe ridiculed him. For years, scientists refused to believe that snow could exist so close to the equator, dismissing his account as a mirage or an optical illusion.
The First Attempts
German explorer Baron Carl Claus von der Decken made the first recorded attempts to climb Kilimanjaro in 1861 and again in 1862. Accompanied by British geologist Richard Thornton, von der Decken reached the lower slopes but was forced to turn back at around 8,200 feet (2,500 meters) due to impassable terrain and hostile encounters with local tribes. Despite the failure, von der Decken confirmed the presence of permanent snow and ice, finally convincing European geographers that Rebmann had been correct.
Count Teleki's Expedition
Hungarian explorer Count Samuel Teleki led an expedition that reached the snowline at approximately 16,700 feet (5,090 meters). Teleki climbed higher than anyone before him, but the combination of altitude sickness, extreme cold, and lack of proper equipment forced his team to descend. His accounts of glaciers and vast ice fields at the equator captivated the European imagination, sparking a new era of exploration.
The First Ascent — Hans Meyer & Ludwig Purtscheller
German geographer Hans Meyer and Austrian mountaineer Ludwig Purtscheller, accompanied by local guide Yohani Kinyala Lauwo, became the first people to successfully reach the summit of Kilimanjaro. They reached the highest point of Kibo, which Meyer named Kaiser-Wilhelm-Spitze (Emperor William Peak). Their climb took two attempts — the first failed due to deep snow and impassable ice. On the second attempt, they established camps, cut steps into the glacier, and after six days of climbing, stood atop Africa's highest point at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). The local guide Yohani Kinyala Lauwo lived to be over 120 years old and was still alive to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the ascent.
The Era of Modern Climbing
Following Meyer's ascent, Kilimanjaro attracted adventurers from around the world. The first woman to summit was German Lotte Hohenlohe-Langenburg in 1909. In 1927, the Marangu Route was established, becoming the most popular path to the summit. Today, Kilimanjaro is climbed by over 35,000 people each year, yet it remains a formidable challenge — only about 65% of climbers reach the summit. The mountain's glaciers, which have existed for over 11,000 years, are rapidly receding due to climate change, making every climb a witness to history.
