Your guide collects you from your Mwanza hotel or Mwanza Airport in the morning and heads west out of the city toward the park's western boundary. The road leaves the lake basin behind, running through village country and farmland before the bush thickens on the Ndabaka Gate approach.
While entry formalities are completed at Ndabaka Gate the afternoon run toward camp is a genuine game drive, dropping into the Grumeti River valley through corridor woodlands where elephant, buffalo and giraffe cross the tracks.
The Grumeti itself is the afternoon's headline: deep green pools packed with hippos and patrolled by very large crocodiles, with fish eagles overhead. Dinner and the first overnight are at a Grumeti-area camp or lodge confirmed at booking.
Mwanza traffic and gate queues can shift arrival times. Your guide builds buffers so the first river session still catches good light; exact collection time is confirmed the day before travel.
The first full river day opens before dawn at the Grumeti pools, where hippos grunt in the dark water and crocodiles slide off the banks as the light comes up. The morning works the pool lines slowly, scanning for leopard in the riverine trees and lions moving back from the night.

Take the camp's earliest breakfast, claim a bank position, and wait — herds test the water for hours before committing, and the commit happens in minutes. Scan the far bank, not the water: dust, birds and movement on the ridge line up before any crossing starts. Crocodiles show best in the middle of the day when they bask. The Grumeti crossings are seasonal, not scheduled. From roughly May to July the wildebeest herds push north through the western corridor and must cross the Grumeti River — a narrower, crocodile-rich channel that stages dramatic, compressed crossings quite different from the Mara theatre.
The exact timing varies between years, driven by rains and pasture rather than by any calendar. On the ground it means herds bunching on the banks for hours or days, then committing in a rush while crocodiles hold the pools and predators work both banks.
