6-Day Serengeti Mid-Range Safari — Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater & the Western Serengeti

A relaxed morning after the game drive, with a short transfer through the green Ngorongoro highlands toward Karatu. Your guide pauses for viewpoints as the forested rift walls frame the route north to the crater.

You cross into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area through its official gate, checking in while the highland air cools around you. The afternoon is yours at the rim lodge — a walk on the edge of the crater, a coffee with views, or a short optional village walk in the area (arranged locally if requested).

Sunset over the crater floor is the headline of the evening, followed by full-board dinner and overnight on the rim. Weather can bring mist and chill, so layers are essential, and exact rim arrival is confirmed on the day.

At first light your vehicle descends the winding crater road to the flat, enclosed floor below the forested walls. The several hours on the floor cover the lake, the marshes and the open plains where lion, spotted hyena, buffalo, zebra and the crater's black rhino concentrate year-round.

After a picnic lunch by the crater lake or the designated picnic site, you drive back up the rim and continue north-east. The route passes the Olduvai Gorge viewpoint where the ground allows, before reaching Naabi Hill gate into Serengeti National Park in the late afternoon.

The first Serengeti game drive starts almost immediately, moving across central short-grass plains before you check into your tented camp or lodge. Dinner and overnight are inside the park, full board included; gate delays and herd location shape the exact timing.

Dawn sends you out across the Seronera valley in search of the cats that make central Serengeti famous. Lions on kopjes, leopard resting in riverine fig and acacia, and cheetah on the open plains are the classic targets of these morning hours.

Midday breaks at the lodge or a picnic site in the shade, before a late-afternoon drive that continues into the golden hour — peak activity for hunters returning and herbivores moving to water. Your private vehicle allows patient, flexible viewing at every sighting.

Return to camp after sunset for dinner and overnight. The migration's position on your dates is discussed with your guide, who may suggest a slightly different drive area, subject to park rules and the day's reports.

After breakfast the safari heads west across the plains toward the Grumeti River and the Western Corridor. In migration season these grasslands hold dense herds; out of season they still offer superb predator and resident wildlife country with far fewer vehicles.

Game drives en route and into the afternoon focus on the riverine habitat, the vast plains and the kopjes. The Grumeti's resident crocodiles, hippo pods and the big cats that shadow the herds reward patient eyes.

You overnight at a western Serengeti camp or lodge, full board. Western access roads can be heavy in the rains and the migration is never predictable, so the day's route is finalised by your guide on the ground.

One last early drive through the western plains before the long road home. It is a quiet parting gift — light that turns the grass gold and, with luck, a final predator sighting to bookend the week.

By mid-morning you leave through the park gates and drive east, skirting the Ngorongoro highlands with a lunch stop on the way, then the winding descent to Arusha. The return is long, so a sensible onward flight window is advised at the quoting stage.
