Retima Hippo Pool Safari Guide: Serengeti’s River Hippos, Crocodiles, Waterbirds & Year-Round Central Valley Wildlife
Three-Day River Stays to Twelve-Day Island Finales — the Central Water Done Properly
Explore the Retima Hippo Pool: a permanent pool on the Seronera river system where hippo pods gather year-round with crocodile, waterbirds and the elephant and buffalo that come down to drink, on the same circuit as the valley’s fig trees, plains and granite kopjes. Fly into Seronera airstrip or drive from Arusha — camps, gateways and season windows confirmed at booking.
Retima Hippo Pool Region
The Retima Hippo Pool is the central valley’s permanent water show: a deep pool on the Seronera river where hippo pods sit packed from first light, crocodile line the banks, and the birdlife — fish eagles, kingfishers, herons — works the current all day. Elephant and buffalo come down to drink, and the riverine figs around the system hold the valley’s leopards.
The pool sits inside the same Seronera circuit as the granite kopjes, the open plains and the Moru ground east, so river mornings and rock afternoons sit naturally in one itinerary. Fly into Seronera airstrip or drive from Arusha; three- and four-day stays cover the water well, six- and seven-day plans open the full central region, and the twelve-day loop closes on Zanzibar.
Every gateway, season window, camp and price is confirmed in writing at booking — nothing on this page is a promise the wild cannot keep.
- Permanent hippo pool on the Seronera river
- Crocodile banks and waterbird life
- Riverine leopard country
- Seronera airstrip gateway
- Same circuit as the granite kopjes
- 3-day river stays to island finales
Retima Hippo Pool Region at a Glance
A central-valley primer: gateways, season logic and what the pool actually delivers.
The Region
The Retima Hippo Pool sits on the Seronera river system in central Serengeti, a permanent pool a short game drive from the camps around the Seronera Valley, reached by scheduled or charter flight to Seronera airstrip or by road from Arusha and the Ngorongoro gates.
Your gateway and arrival sequence are confirmed against your itinerary before you travel.
What Lives Here
Hippo pods pack the pool year-round, crocodile bask on the banks, fish eagles and kingfishers work the current, and the riverine figs around it hold leopard, elephant and buffalo.
Sightings follow the animals' own movement; nothing is promised.
Length is Flexible
Three days cover the pool, the river loops and the valley; four and six add the kopjes and Moru ground; seven and twelve-day plans combine central Serengeti with the crater, the north or a Zanzibar close.
Your exact plan is confirmed when you book.
Season Pattern
The pool never dries, so the hippos are resident all year; the migration crosses the central region roughly December to April nearby; green-season months bring the fullest waterbird life.
Dates are confirmed against the season before booking.
How You Travel
Fly into Seronera airstrip or drive in from Arusha or the Ngorongoro side, then run river and pool drives in a 4WD with an English-speaking guide.
Vehicle and guide are described as private only when your confirmed booking specifies it.
Two Gateways
Fly-in plans land at Seronera airstrip with short transfers to camp; road plans come from Arusha or the crater gates with game-viewing folded into the transit.
The gateway is confirmed per itinerary.
Best Time to Go
The pool works year-round; mornings and late afternoons give the fullest pods and the best light; June to October brings dry-season concentration around the water.
Green-season months keep birdlife and quieter country.
Price on Request
Pricing depends on season position, group size, nights, gateway flights and camp tier.

Retima Hippo Pool Region Stages
Four region stages: the river arrival, the pool at first light, the river loops and the valley close that sends you out.
Your central-Serengeti days open on the river. Fly into Seronera airstrip or drive in from Arusha and the Ngorongoro gates, then run a first game drive down to the water — the Retima Hippo Pool sits on the Seronera river system, a permanent pool where the valley's hippo pods gather.
After arrival formalities your guide heads for camp with a slow lunch drive; the afternoon loop returns to the pool and the riverine shade around it, where crocodile bask on the banks, kingfishers work the current and elephant come down to drink. Meals sit around the drive pattern with picnic lunches on full field days.
Overnight in the Seronera area. Camp and lodge choices, arrival flights, gate timings and the driving sequence are confirmed against your dates, group size and season window at booking.
The pool is the day's subject. Arrive with the first light while the pods are still packed in the water — sparring bulls, mothers with calves, the great yawns that flash ivory — then watch the bank life: crocodile lined up on the warm sand, monitor lizards, herons, storks and fish eagles holding the current.
Hippos leave the water to graze at dusk, so late afternoon gives the second full window: the pods shift, the bank empties and refills, and the light on the water turns gold. Your guide works both windows and rests the middle of the day in camp shade.
Overnight back in the Seronera area. Pool levels, herd positions and viewing angles move with season and rainfall; nothing about the day's sightings is promised — the pool is permanent, the arrangement of animals in it is not.
A full field day works the river system beyond the pool: the Seronera and Orangi river lines hold fig shade, grazing bends and the leopard territory the central valley is known for. The driving follows the water — every bend is a scan point for cat, elephant and the bird cast.
Picnic lunch in the shade, a midday rest, then a return pass on the open plains between the river loops where cheetah hunt and buffalo graze in numbers. The pool gets one more look as the light drops.
Overnight in the Seronera area. River routing follows current conditions, park access and the day's wildlife reports; your guide repositions against fresh information rather than a fixed map.
The final morning folds the rest of the valley in: a pass at the granite kopjes above the plains, lions on the warm rock if the light is right, then one last loop along the river before breakfast.
Timing bends to your departure — a last short drive if the flight is late, or a direct transfer to Seronera airstrip if it is early. Road departures continue toward Arusha or the crater gates with game-viewing folded into the transit.
Drop-off is at Seronera airstrip for your onward flight, or on the road at the gateway your itinerary states. Flight times, gate windows and road conditions are confirmed with your booking documents.

The Great Migration & Best Time to Visit the Hippo Pool
How the herds sit around central Serengeti.
Central Serengeti as the Herd Highway
The migration crosses the central Seronera country roughly December to April as the herds calve on the southern plains nearby; from May onward they push north and west through the Grumeti and Mara corridors, leaving the valley to its resident cats and the pool to its resident hippos.
June to October concentrates game around the remaining water in the valley; green-season months keep birdlife, newborns and quieter country. The pool itself never dries, so the hippos are a fixture whatever the calendar says.
Your consultant confirms dates against the season at booking. Herd lines shift with rain, never schedules.
Guides plan around current wildlife movements, subject to natural conditions and the location of the herds on your travel dates.
Month-by-Month Comfort & Game
Comfort: warm days and cool nights year-round; dawn starts on the river stay fresh at altitude.
Great Migration Month-by-Month Tracker
Follow the herds across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Central Serengeti sits in the herd path roughly December to April.
Migration timing is seasonal and shifts with rain and grazing. Your itinerary adapts to where the herds are on your dates.

Use a window bean bag for lens stabilization on the pool stakeouts; quick setups catch shifting pods.
Dust & Glare Protection
