Detailed Itinerary

Day-by-day breakdown of your 5-day Serengeti budget safari experience.

1
Transfer & First Game Drive
Arusha → Serengeti National Park
+

Morning: Your budget safari begins with a pickup from your Arusha hotel or Kilimanjaro International Airport at around 7:00 AM. After a warm welcome and a brief orientation with your guide, you head toward the Great Rift Valley and the tremendous panorama at the Ngorontoro viewpoint before reaching the Serengeti.

Midday: Enter the Serengeti through the Naabi Hill Gate, one of the most dramatic entrances on Earth. Enjoy a picnic lunch at a scenic viewpoint while try your first sighting of zebras, giraffes, and wildebeest grazing in the distance.

Afternoon: Set on a first afternoon game drive (approximately 3 hours) in the southern or central Serengeti. The golden-hour light is perfect for photography, and this is a prime window to spot lions, elephants, and cheetahs. Your guide will be tracking the migration and the big cats.

Evening: Arrive at your campsite or budget lodge for dinner. Around a crackling campfire, enjoy chef-cooked meals and stargazing under some of the darkest, cleanest skies on the planet.

Accommodation: Budget campsite or budget lodge inside / near the Serengeti

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

2
Full-Day Serengeti Game Drive
Central Serengeti — Seronera Valley
+

Early Morning: Wake at 6:00 AM for coffee and tea, then leave at 6:30 AM with a packed breakfast. Morning drives are ideal for predators — lions, hyenas and leopards are most active after a night of hunting. The Seronera Valley is famous for its high concentration of big cats year-round.

Midday: Stop at a shaded acacia spot for a bush picnic served by your guide. Continue through kopjes (rocky outcrops), natural lookouts where leopards and lions lounge. Your guide explains tracking animals — footprints, dung, and bird calls that signal nearby wildlife.

Afternoon: Cruise the seasonal swamps and grasslands where elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and countless antelope gather at waterholes. During migration season (June to October), the herds and river crossings are the highlight.

Evening: Return to camp around 6:00 PM with a final game drive along a different route and the golden late-afternoon light. Relax over a three-course dinner and storytelling by the campfire.

Photography Tip: Bring a telephoto lens (200-400mm recommended). Morning and late afternoon are the golden hours — the guide can position the vehicle for the best angles and light.

Accommodation: Budget campsite or budget lodge

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

3
Morning Serengeti & Transfer
Serengeti → Ngorongoro Highlands / Karatu
+

Early Morning: Rise at 5:45 AM for an early game drive (6:00 AM to 8:30 AM) — the best time to see nocturnal predators returning and crepuscular animals active at dawn. Lions, leopards, hyenas, and jackals are frequently spotted against a glowing sunrise.

Late Morning: Return to camp for a full breakfast, then check out and depart for Ngorongoro around 9:45 AM. The scenic 3-hour drive climbs from the Serengeti plains into the lush, cooler Ngorongoro Highlands, ascending from about 1,500 to over 2,200 metres above sea level.

Midday: Pass through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate, where Maasai pastoralists graze cattle beside wildlife — a unique example of human-wildlife coexistence. Stop to admire panoramic views of the caldera and learn about its geology.

Afternoon: Arrive in the Karatu/Budget area by early afternoon. After check-in and lunch, you can relax, or optionally visit a nearby Maasai boma to learn about their traditions, beadwork, and way of life.

Evening: Enjoy a simple, hearty dinner and an early night — tomorrow is the unforgettable Ngorongoro Crater descent. Prepare your camera for the crater floor.

Accommodation: Budget lodge or campsite near Ngorongoro / Karatu

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

4
Ngorongoro Crater Full-Day Game Drive
Ngorongoro Crater Floor
+

Early Morning: Wake at 5:30 AM. After an early breakfast, descend the 600-metre crater wall — the switchback road offers spectacular sunrise views over the caldera. Only registered vehicles with special permits enter the crater, keeping the wildlife experience controlled and spacious.

Morning Game Drive (6:30 AM to 10:30 AM): The crater floor spans 260 square kilometres and hosts over 25,000 large animals, many of which stay within the caldera walls year-round. This is one of the best places in East Africa to see the endangered black rhino (about 30 individuals). Lions here are famously bold. Lake Magadi attracts thousands of pink flamingos.

Midday (10:30 AM to 12:30 PM): Drive to the Hippo Pool for a picnic lunch as hippos wallow in clear water while zebras, wildebeest, and waterbucks graze beside you — with the crater walls rising around you. Continue into the Lerai Forest for bushbuck, monkeys, and forest birds.

Afternoon (12:30 PM to 3:00 PM): The crater's variety is unmatched — from the soda lake to freshwater springs, marshes, grasslands, and acacia woodland, each supporting different species. Golden jackals, bat-eared foxes, spotted hyenas, and servals are commonly sighted.

Late Afternoon: Begin the 3:00 PM ascent back up the crater wall — a last incredible look at the landscape below. Return to your accommodation for some rest and a hearty dinner recounting the day's sightings.

Wildlife Highlight: The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the very few places where you can reliably try to see the "Big Five" (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, black rhino) in a single wilderness.

Accommodation: Budget lodge or campsite near Ngorongoro / Karatu

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

5
Departure Day
Ngorongoro → Arusha / Airport
+

Morning: Enjoy a final breakfast and check out. Begin your transfer back to Arusha. The scenic drive passes Maasai villages, coffee plantations, and the friendly farming town of Karatu, before descending through the Great Rift Valley.

Midday: Stop at a scenic viewpoint for photographs of the Rift Valley escarpment and Lake Manyara in the distance (weather permitting). Arrive in Arusha around midday.

Transfer: Continue to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your departure flight, or to your Arusha hotel if you're extending your stay.

Extension Options: Extend to Zanzibar (beach add-on), a Lake Manyara day trip, Tarangire National Park, or a Kilimanjaro trek. Ask your safari coordinator about discounted combination packages.

"Jambo! I'm Daniel, born and raised at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in a small village called Moshi. I've been guiding safaris for over 10 years — and I love showing travellers that a budget safari in Tanzania can be every bit as magical as an expensive one. It's never about the price tag; it's about those moments.

My most memorable sighting? Last July, we watched a cheetah mother teach her three cubs to hunt on the Serengeti plains — it took over two hours, and by the end there wasn't a dry eye in the vehicle. These are the moments a guide book can't prepare you for.

I know the Serengeti like my backyard — where the lions are resting at 10 AM, where the leopards hunt at dusk, and where the migration will be based on the last rains. Let me show you the Tanzania I grew up loving — without breaking the bank."

Destinations

Serengeti National Park & Ngorongoro Crater

Two of the world's greatest wildlife destinations — a Serengeti National Park budget tour plus a Ngorongoro Crater budget safari — together in one affordable 5-day itinerary.

Serengeti National Park

The most famous national park in Africa — an endless expanse of plains hosting the Great Migration of 1-2 million wildebeest, plus lions, leopards, elephants, and cheetah. The Serengeti's central Seronera Valley offers predator density like nowhere else, and its landscapes and light are a photographer's dream year-round.

Ngorongoro Crater

The world's largest inactive volcanic caldera (260 sq km), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. The rainforest floor hosts the densest population of wildlife in Africa — including the endangered black rhino — with lions, elephants, zebras and buffalos in numbers rarely seen elsewhere — one of the most reliable places in Africa to try for the Big Five in a single day.

Best Season

When to Visit Serengeti on a Budget

Every season has its magic — pick the one that matches your wildlife priorities and budget.

Jan–Mar — Calving Season

Southern Serengeti (Ndutu) hosts calving — newborns and intense predator action. Great value and excellent for families.

Apr–May — Green Season

Lush landscapes, fewer crowds, the lowest budget rates. Long grass is offset (roads). Serenity and savings.

Jun–Oct — Dry Season

The best general wildlife viewing; herds gather around water & the Migration varies in the north. Peak travel time.

Nov–Dec — Short Green

Good wildlife, fewer crowds, and more affordable rates as herds move south for the calves in early December.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this 5-day Serengeti budget safari.

Is a budget safari in Tanzania worth it?+
Absolutely. A budget Tanzania safari is a true cheap African safari Tanzania experience — it gives you the same wildlife, the same parks, and the same expert guiding as an expensive safari — you simply spend less on accommodation and comfort. You still enjoy Big Five game drives, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, professional guides, and camping or budget lodge basics.
What is included in a 5-day Serengeti budget safari?+
Included: 4 nights camping or budget lodge, full board meals, 4x4 Land Cruiser transport, licensed guide, park and conservation fees, Ngorongoro Crater fee, and all game drives. Excluded: international flights, visa, insurance, tips, and personal extras.
Can I see the Big Five on a budget safari?+
Yes. Serengeti and Ngorongoro are home to lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and black rhino (in the crater). The Big Five sighting success rate on this 5-day route is around 85%.
Is camping safe in Serengeti National Park?+
Yes. We use designated, registered camps inside the park with security and a campfire at night. Experienced guides manage safety rules, and you can upgrade to a budget lodge for extra comfort.
What should I pack for a budget safari?+
Neutral clothing, warm layers, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, a camera with a telephoto lens, binoculars, power bank, toiletries, medications, a headlamp, and some small US dollar notes for tips.
When is the best time to visit the Serengeti?+
The dry season (June-October) offers the best wildlife viewing and Great Migration river crossings. December-March is calving season in the south. The green season (April-May) has lower budget rates.
How much does a budget safari in Tanzania cost?+
A 5-day budget Tanzania safari runs from about $200 to $360 per person, depending on group size and season. Group-joining is the most affordable (from about $200). Solo or private safaris cost more.
Can solo travelers join a group safari?+
Yes. We host solo travellers on joining group budget safaris — you share the vehicle, guide, and costs with a small group of 2-6 people, making it the most economical option.
Are children allowed on this safari?+
Yes. The budget safari is family-friendly for children about 6 and older. We recommend a private safari for smaller children and offer child rates on family trips.
What is the difference between camping and lodge options?+
Camping: dome tents inside the park with a campfire, chef-cooked meals, and the full wilderness experience at the lowest price. A budget lodge: a proper room, hot shower, and privacy at a slightly higher price. Same safari program either way.
Do I need travel insurance?+
Yes, comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory and must cover medical evacuation, trip cancellation, baggage loss, and emergency repatriation. We recommend World Nomads, SafetyWing, or your local provider.
What type of vehicle is used for game drives?+
A customized Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4 with a pop-up roof for 360-degree game viewing. It carries charging ports, a cooler, binoculars, reference books, and a first aid kit. Up to 6 guests per vehicle.
Are meals vegetarian or special-diet friendly?+
Yes. We accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary needs with advance notice. Meals are chef-cooked and full of fresh, local ingredients.
Can I extend my safari to Zanzibar?+
Absolutely. After the safari ends, you can take a connecting flight to Zanzibar. We can arrange beach resort accommodation, spice tours, snorkelling, and water sports — our most popular combo packages.
What is the Ngorongoro Crater and why is it special?+
The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest inactive volcanic caldera (26 km / 100+ sq miles). It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. The crater floor has the highest density of wildlife in Africa, including the endangered black rhino.
Is this safari suitable for solo travellers?+
Yes, and it's ideal for them. Solo travellers can join a group to share costs, or book privately (a supplement applies). Ask about our solo pricing options.
Can I add a hot air balloon ride?+
Yes, a hot air balloon safari over the Serengeti is available as an optional add-on (from about $500/person), including a champagne bush breakfast after landing. Highly recommended!
What is the tipping culture in Tanzania?+
Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. Recommended: safari guide $15-25 per person per day, cook $10 per day. Tipping in USD is preferred, and we provide a full guide before departure.
What currency should I bring?+
USD is widely accepted. Bring small bills ($1, $5, $10, $20) for tips and incidentals. ATMs are in Arusha but unreliable in the bush. Cards are accepted at major lodges (3-5% surcharge).
Do I need a visa for Tanzania?+
Most nationalities require a tourist visa. An e-visa is available at visa.immigration.go.tz (apply 2+ weeks ahead), or visa on arrival at the airport (about $50 USD for most).
Will I be able to charge my camera and phone?+
Budget lodges offer 24-hour electricity; camps often have powerpoints or a battery charging facility. Each vehicle has USB and 12V ports. Bring a power bank and multi-port charger.
Is Wi-Fi available on safari?+
Wi-Fi is limited in remote areas. Budget lodges typically have lobby Wi-Fi; camps rarely do (a chance to disconnect). A local SIM buys reliable data for WhatsApp throughout the trip.
What is the difference between a group budget safari and a private one?+
In a group-join safari you share the vehicle and guide with 2-6 other travellers, which cuts costs dramatically (from $200). A private safari is just for you and your party — your vehicle, your schedule — at a higher per-person rate.
Can I customize the itinerary?+
Yes. You can adjust game drive times, add destinations (Tarangire or Lake Manyara), extend days, or upgrade accommodation/transport. Contact us and we'll build a custom budget plan at no extra charge.
How do I book and what payment methods do you accept?+
WhatsApp us at +255 623 524 929 or email kizzaadventures@gmail.com. We accept bank transfers, Visa, Mastercard, Amex, PayPal, and Google/Apple Pay. 30% deposit secures, balance due 30 days before departure.
What is the weather like during the safari?+
Temperatures vary: Serengeti 18-28°C (64-82°F) year-round; Ngorongoro rim 10-22°C (50-72°F), cold at night. Mornings and evenings are cool, midday warm. Bring layers — a fleece is essential for early game drives.
Why should I book with Kizza Adventures?+
Kizza Adventures is a locally owned operator with 10+ years of experience. Benefits: authentic local knowledge, transparent all-in pricing, safe registered camps, experienced guides, and a 5.0☆ verified rating. We make it possible for budget travellers to see the same wildlife, too.
