Two Icons, One Unforgettable Escape
Picture this: instead of long dusty drives, you begin with a scenic 2.5-hour journey through the Great Rift Valley and your first game drive begins the moment you enter Tarangire. Lions, elephants, and giraffes are often seen within the first hours of your safari. That's the power of a premium lodge safari.
Our 4-Day Premium Lodge Safari is the perfect lodge escape, combining two of Tanzania's most iconic destinations with unhurried game viewing: the Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater. This is the ideal itinerary for travellers who want extra time in the wild without long road days.
With Tarangire National Park as your focus, you gain an intimate wildlife experience in one of Tanzania's most beautiful and uncrowded parks. A full sunrise drive, a full afternoon drive, and a picnic lunch in the bush mean every golden hour is spent game viewing. The highlight - sleeping in a world-class lodge perched among the treetops or on the crater rim, with infinity views and gourmet dining - is an experience that stays with you forever. Massive elephant herds, ancient baobab trees, and excellent predator sightings await.
Every detail is taken care of: private guide, all meals, park fees, and transfers. You simply show up and experience Tanzania's wildlife at its most magnificent.
As your Land Cruiser enters Tarangire's baobab-dotted landscape, elephants graze beside the river and lions rest on ancient kopjes. Detailed Itinerary
Day-by-day breakdown of your 4-Day Premium Lodge Safari experience.
Morning: Your premium lodge safari begins with a 7:00 AM pickup from your Arusha hotel or Kilimanjaro International Airport. After a brief orientation with your safari coordinator, you'll depart for Tarangire National Park, approximately a 2.5-hour drive through the Great Rift Valley. The scenic route passes through Maasai villages and offers stunning views of the valley escarpment. Your private guide and customised Toyota Land Cruiser with pop-up roof will be your home for the next four days.
Midday: Arrive at Tarangire's main gate and begin your first game drive immediately. Tarangire is famous for its massive baobab trees and large elephant herds - some groups of 100+ elephants are commonly seen. The Tarangire River, the park's only permanent water source, attracts a dense concentration of wildlife during the dry season (June-October). Your guide will introduce you to the park's key areas: the riverine forests, the open savannah plains, and the baobab-dotted hillsides.
Afternoon: Check into Tarangire Treetops Lodge, where you'll be greeted with a cool towel and welcome drink. After settling into your treetop suite, depart for your first scheduled afternoon game drive (approximately 3 hours, 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM). The golden hour light is perfect for photography, and this is prime time to spot predators beginning their evening hunt. Tarangire has one of the highest densities of lions in Tanzania, and leopards are frequently spotted in the sausage trees along the river.
Evening: Return to the lodge as the sun sets over the baobab-studded landscape. Freshen up in your en-suite bathroom before gathering for a pre-dinner drink on the lodge's panoramic deck. A gourmet multi-course dinner is served, featuring a blend of international cuisine and local Swahili flavours. Retire to your luxury treetop suite or stargaze from your private veranda - Tarangire's remote location offers spectacular night skies.
Photography Tip: The baobab trees at sunset are iconic Tarangire shots. Position yourself with the tree silhouetted against the setting sun. A wide-angle lens is essential for capturing the scale of these ancient giants.
Accommodation: Tarangire Treetops Lodge or similar (en-suite bathroom, hot shower, private veranda, panoramic views)
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Early Morning: Wake up at 5:45 AM for early morning tea or coffee delivered to your suite. Depart at 6:15 AM for a full sunrise game drive. Morning drives (6:15 AM to 10:00 AM) are ideal for predator sightings as lions, leopards, and hyenas are most active after a night of hunting. Your guide navigates the game track network, communicating with other guides via radio and reading animal behaviour to anticipate movements.
Midday: Pause for a delicious picnic breakfast in the bush beside the Tarangire River, surrounded by elephants and monkeys. After refreshments, continue exploring the Silale Swamp - a seasonal wetland that attracts large concentrations of wildebeest, buffalo, and waterbuck during the dry season. Your guide will share insights into the park's ecology, from the ancient baobabs storing thousands of litres of water to the termite mounds that host dwarf mongooses.
Afternoon: Return to the lodge for a leisurely lunch and a siesta during the heat of the day. In the late afternoon (4:00 PM to 6:30 PM), depart for a second game drive of the day. This is prime time to spot lions beginning their evening hunt and leopards descending from their daytime branches. The golden hour light transforms the landscape into a photographer's dream.
Evening: Return to Tarangire Treetops Lodge as the sun dips behind the baobab-studded hills. Enjoy a sundowner on your private veranda before a gourmet multi-course dinner. Retire to your luxury treetop suite - or book an optional night game drive to see the park's nocturnal residents.
Photography Tip: With two full days in Tarangire, you have the luxury of waiting for the perfect light. Baobabs at sunset, elephants crossing the river at golden hour, and lions resting on kopjes are all signature Tarangire shots. A telephoto lens (200-400mm) is essential.
Accommodation: Tarangire Treetops Lodge or similar (night 2 of 2)
Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch & Dinner
Early Morning: Enjoy one final sunrise game drive through Tarangire (6:30 AM to 9:00 AM), focusing on the riverine forests and the Kopjes where leopards laze in the morning warmth. This relaxed farewell lets you soak in the park's atmosphere one last time.
Midday: Return to the lodge for a full breakfast and check out. Begin the scenic transfer to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (approximately 3.5-4 hours). The route climbs through the Great Rift Valley and past Lake Manyara, offering breathtaking views of the escarpment. Arrive at the crater rim by early afternoon and check into Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge, perched on the rim with sweeping views across the crater floor below.
Afternoon: Relax and enjoy lunch with panoramic crater views. In the late afternoon, take a guided walk along the crater rim (subject to park regulations) where you can spot buffalo, eland, and possibly black rhino from the edge. Enjoy the lodge's facilities - infinity pool, observation decks, and sun terrace - as the sun sets over the crater, casting long shadows across the savannah floor 600 metres below.
Evening: Enjoy a gourmet dinner at the lodge, with warm hospitality and cultural performances from local staff. Ngorongoro Serena's stone-and-thatch architecture blends beautifully into the rim, and nights are cool at this 2,200-metre altitude - perfect for sleeping under a warm duvet. Stargazing from the rim is exceptional with minimal light pollution.
Wildlife Note: The Ngorongoro Crater is often called Africa's Eden - a natural amphitheatre sheltering approximately 25,000 large animals including the densest lion population on the continent and the endangered black rhino.
Accommodation: Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge or similar (crater rim, panoramic views, en-suite bathroom, restaurant & bar)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Early Morning: Rise before dawn for the highlight of your safari - descending into the Ngorongoro Crater. Depart at 6:15 AM to beat the crowds and catch the best wildlife activity. The descent of 600 metres takes you through lush rim forest before the crater floor opens before you: a vast grassland dotted with hippo pools, acacia woodland, and the permanent Lake Magadi, home to flocks of flamingos.
Midday: Enjoy a full morning game drive (approximately 6 hours) across the crater floor. The crater offers a near-complete Big Five experience in a single morning: lions, elephants, buffalo, and the endangered black rhino (82% sighting rate). Look out for cheetahs on the open plains, hippos and crocodiles in the pools, and the crater's famous black-maned lions. A champagne picnic breakfast is served beside the hippo pool.
Afternoon: Begin the ascent back to the rim around 12:30 PM and depart for Arusha (approximately 4 hours). The scenic drive descends through the Ngorongoro highlands, past Karatu's coffee farms and the Great Rift Valley escarpment, with stops for photographs and refreshments. Arrive in Arusha or at Kilimanjaro International Airport in the early evening, in time for onward connections or a Zanzibar extension.
Wildlife Note: With roughly 25,000 large mammals resident on the crater floor, this is one of the densest wildlife areas on earth - the perfect finale for a 4-day premium safari.
Accommodation: Day 4 - Departure Day (no accommodation)
Meals: Breakfast & Picnic Lunch

Meet Your Expert Safari Guide
Your guide is the difference between a good safari and a life-changing one. Every Kizza Adventures guide is born-and-raised Tanzanian with years of professional experience.
Daniel Mrith - Kizza Adventures Safari Guide
"Jambo! I'm Daniel, born and raised at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in a small village called Moshi. I've been guiding safaris for over 12 years - I started as a driver-guide assistant, learning every river crossing, kopje, and lion pride territory by heart before I ever led my first solo trip. I still get excited every time I drive through the gates of Tarangire.
My most memorable sighting? Last year, we watched a cheetah mother teach her three cubs to hunt on the crater floor - it took over two hours, and by the end there wasn't a dry eye in the vehicle. These are the moments a guide book can't prepare you for.
I know Tarangire and the crater like my backyard - where the lions are resting at 10 AM, where the leopards hunt at dusk, and where the rhinos graze in the early light. Let me show you the Tanzania I grew up loving."

Best Time to Visit Tarangire National Park
Tarangire's wildlife viewing varies with the seasons. Here's when to go for the best experience.
Seasonal Wildlife Highlights
Tarangire National Park offers exceptional wildlife viewing year-round, but the dry season months (June to October) are particularly spectacular. During this period, the Tarangire River becomes the park's only permanent water source, attracting vast herds of elephants, zebras, wildebeest, and buffalo from across the region. Predators follow close behind.
June - October (Dry Season - Best): Animals concentrate around the Tarangire River. Massive elephant herds of 100+ individuals are commonly seen. Excellent predator sightings as lions and leopards hunt at water sources. This is the peak season.
November - May (Green Season - Good): Lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and lower rates. Birding is exceptional with migratory species present. The park is less busy, offering a more intimate experience. Wildlife is more dispersed but still plentiful.
Year-Round Highlights: Tarangire's famous baobab trees, diverse birdlife (over 550 species), and the chance to see the Big Five make any time of year rewarding.
Your guide adjusts game drive routes based on current wildlife concentrations for the best possible sightings.
Month-by-Month Wildlife Calendar
Temperature range: 15-18°C (59-64°F) early mornings to 26-28°C (79-82°F) afternoons. Early morning game drives require a light jacket or fleece.
Great Migration Month-by-Month Tracker
Tarangire's wildlife follows the seasons. While the Great Migration roams the wider Serengeti ecosystem, this itinerary focuses on Tarangire and the crater's year-round residents.
Your guide adjusts routes to where the wildlife concentrates, ensuring the best possible sightings each season.
Safari Photography Guide
Capture Tarangire and the crater like a pro. Our guides are trained to help you get the shot.
Recommended Gear
DSLR or mirrorless with a telephoto zoom (200-400mm or 100-400mm ideal). A wide-angle (16-35mm) for landscapes and camp shots. Spare batteries and memory cards are essential - charging available at both lodges.
Golden Hour Magic
The best light is 6:00 - 8:30 AM and 4:30 - 6:30 PM. Our game drives are scheduled around these windows. The low angle creates warm tones, long shadows, and dramatic wildlife portraits.
Drone Regulations
Drones are strictly prohibited in Tanzanian national parks without special permits. Do not bring a drone - it will be confiscated at the airport. We offer professional aerial footage upon request (pre-arranged).
Guide Positioning
Our guides communicate with each other via radio to share sightings. They position the vehicle at the optimal angle for light, composition, and safety. Don't hesitate to ask your guide to move the vehicle for a better shot.
Vehicle Bean Bags
Each vehicle has a window-mount bean bag for lens stabilization. This is more effective than a tripod and allows quick setup when the action is happening. We also carry a monopod in the vehicle.
Protect Your Gear
Dust is the #1 enemy of camera equipment. Bring a camera dust blower, lens cleaning cloths, and a rain cover (dust cover). Zip-lock bags for memory cards and batteries. Avoid changing lenses in open air when possible.

Essential Travel Tips for Tanzania
Everything you need to know before you arrive - visa, vaccines, money, SIM cards, and more.
Visa Requirements
Most nationalities require a visa for Tanzania. E-visa available at visa.immigration.go.tz (apply 2+ weeks before travel). Visa on arrival also available at JRO/NBO airports - $50 USD for US citizens, $50 for most others. Check your country's specific requirements.
Health & Vaccinations
Yellow Fever certificate required if travelling from an endemic country. Recommended: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus, and routine vaccinations. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended - consult your doctor 4-6 weeks before travel.
Travel Insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory. Must cover medical evacuation, trip cancellation, baggage loss, and emergency repatriation. We recommend World Nomads, SafetWing, or your local provider. We do not sell insurance but can advise on adequate coverage.
Money & Tipping
USD is widely accepted. Carry small bills ($1, $5, $10, $20) for tips and incidentals. ATMs available in Arusha but unreliable in safari areas. Recommended tipping: guide $20-30/day, cook $10-15/day. Credit cards accepted at both lodges (3-5% surcharge).
SIM Cards & Internet
Buy a local SIM at JRO airport arrivals or in Arusha. Vodacom and Airtel have the best coverage in safari areas. 10GB data costs ~$10. Lodge WiFi is available but can be slow in remote areas. WhatsApp works well throughout most safari areas.
Tipping Culture & Etiquette
Tanzania has a tipping culture. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated. Safari guides rely on tips as a significant part of their income. Tipping guideline: Safari guide $20-30 per person per day. Lodge staff $5-10 per day. Use the lodge tip box for general staff.
