The Full Five-Day Photo Marathon
Four complete light cycles across the central plains — sessions flex around wildlife, weather, migration timing and the season.
The tour departs Arusha by road in the early morning, climbing through the forested highlands and descending through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area onto the central plains with a gate-formalities pause. Fly-in guests instead arrive at Seronera and meet the crew there — the access choice is confirmed at booking.
After lunch and settling in, the first session opens in the late-afternoon light across the plains around the base, introducing the resident cast — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and the plains antelope — on short grass and riverine edges. The line flexes around the day and no sighting is guaranteed.
Back to camp before dusk for dinner and the first full kit briefing: card workflow, backup routine and the week's pre-dawn schedule. The night is at a comfortable en-suite camp or lodge near the photo zones.
Day Two opens pre-dawn with the wide plains in the first golden light — long shadows, dust in low sun and herds still holding the horizon. With four light cycles in reserve, the first moments are for the landscape you came for, not just the tightest action.
The middle day keeps to camp for card handling, lunch and rest while the sun flattens the light. Where shade and the midday wildlife allow, a short round of riverine woodland looks in on shaded watercourses — kept open rather than promised.
The dusk window returns to the riverine lines as predators step toward the water and the light turns honey-gold. After dark, dinner and a review of the day's frames set up tomorrow's options.
Day Three spends the light on the kopje ground — granitic outcrops where lions drape over warm rock and cheetah use the short-grass edges. The pace turns slower and more deliberate here, with compositions built around rock, dwarf trees and a wide empty horizon.
Long telephoto work dominates the open ground, reading distance and behaviour before the release. The route adapts to where individual animals are holding — no sighting is guaranteed — and the guide manages the day's three windows around the kopje positions.
A picnic lunch on the kopje ground between sessions lets the middle of the day double as a wildlife survey. Return to camp as the golden light fades, dinner and rest ahead of the waterhole morning.
Day Four turns the light onto the waterhole circuit, where seasonal pans concentrate wildlife in the dry season and draw predator and prey to the same frames. Dawn here means drinking herds, bathing elephants and the reflected light you cannot get on open grass.
The middle of the day rests where shade allows, with the route re-reading herd movements and any new arrivals on the pans. Migration timing shifts everything — the plains can be full of herds one week and empty the next — and the guide works the windows that the season actually offers.
The closing dusk session stays on the waterholes until the light leaves, compressing the trip's best water action into one last golden hour. Dinner and a final review of the frames show where the week has earned its keep.
A final pre-dawn session closes the marathon on the strongest line from the week, using the last golden window for the shots still missing from the edit. Four dawns and four dusks later, the morning is about finishing with the frame you came for, not covering new ground.
After breakfast the gate pause opens the road back through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to Arusha. Drive time depends on road conditions, wildlife stoppages and the season, with a buffer held for evening flights from Arusha or Kilimanjaro.

Vehicle Bean Bags

Dust is the #1 enemy of camera equipment. Bring a camera dust blower, lens cleaning cloths, and a rain cover (dust cover). Zip-lock bags for memory cards and batteries. Avoid changing lenses in open air when possible.

Health & Vaccinations
Yellow Fever certificate required if travelling from an endemic country. Recommended: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus, and routine vaccinations. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended "” consult your doctor 4-6 weeks before travel.
Travel Insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory. Must cover medical evacuation, trip cancellation, baggage loss, and emergency repatriation. We recommend World Nomads, SafetWing, or your local provider. We do not sell insurance but can advise on adequate coverage.

Buy a local SIM at JRO airport arrivals or in Arusha. Vodacom and Airtel have the best coverage in safari areas. 10GB data costs ~$10. Lodge WiFi is available but can be slow in remote areas. WhatsApp works well throughout most of the Serengeti.
