Why Explore Southern Tanzania?
Southern Tanzania offers a completely different safari experience from the crowded northern circuit. Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) and Ruaha National Park are vast, remote wilderness areas where you can drive for hours without seeing another vehicle. This is the Africa of old — untamed, exclusive, and utterly captivating.
The region is renowned for its exceptional predator sightings, including one of Africa's highest densities of lion and leopard in Ruaha, and thriving packs of African wild dogs. The Rufiji River in Nyerere is the lifeblood of the park, offering spectacular boat safaris that bring you eye-to-eye with hippos, crocodiles, and elephants at the water's edge. Walking safaris here are among the best in Tanzania, led by armed rangers who reveal the bush's hidden secrets.
With luxury lodges tucked along riverbanks and atop granite kopjes, this is the ultimate destination for travellers seeking an exclusive, authentic, and luxurious southern circuit safari.

Afternoon: Upon landing at the Nyerere airstrip, your private guide and 4x4 safari vehicle will be waiting. Enjoy a game drive en route to your luxury riverside camp, introducing you to the park's diverse landscapes and wildlife. Arrive at camp, where you'll be greeted with a cool towel and welcome drink.
Evening: Sundowner by the Rufiji River as the sun sets — watch hippos and crocodiles in the water while enjoying a gin and tonic. Return to camp for a gourmet dinner under the stars.
Wildlife: Elephant, giraffe, hippo, crocodile, impala, zebra
Accommodation: Luxury riverside camp (e.g. Roho ya Selous) — en-suite tent, private deck, river views
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Photography: River landscapes, wildlife at water's edge, golden hour over the Rufiji
Morning (6:00 AM): Early departure for a sunrise boat safari on the Rufiji River. This is the best time to see wildlife congregating along the riverbanks. Your guide will navigate the channels and lagoons, bringing you close to hippo pods, basking crocodiles, elephants drinking at the water's edge, and an extraordinary variety of water birds including African fish eagles, kingfishers, storks, and herons.
Midday: Return to camp for a hearty brunch. Relax at the camp — enjoy the pool, read in the lounge, or simply take in the views from your private deck. Optional afternoon game drive for those wanting more exploration.
Evening: Late afternoon boat cruise with sundowner drinks on a sandbank or scenic river bend. Watch the sunset paint the sky in shades of orange and purple while hippos grunt nearby. Return to camp for dinner.
Wildlife: Hippo, crocodile, waterbuck, buffalo, elephant, African fish eagle, kingfisher, stork
Accommodation: Same luxury riverside camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Photography: River reflections, birdlife in flight, golden hour on the water
Morning (6:30 AM): Guided walking safari with an armed ranger — one of the most exhilarating experiences in Nyerere. Unlike game drives, walking lets you connect with the bush on a sensory level. Your guide will teach you to read animal tracks, identify plants and their medicinal uses, and listen for bird calls that signal nearby wildlife. The floodplains of Nyerere are ideal for walking safaris with open terrain and excellent visibility.
Afternoon: Return to camp for brunch and rest. Depart for a full afternoon game drive across Nyerere's vast floodplains and miombo woodlands. This is prime time to see lions, wild dogs, and elephants. The park is famous for its large elephant herds and healthy predator population.
Evening: Bush dinner under the stars — your camp sets up a dining table in the wilderness with lanterns, a campfire, and a multi-course meal served by your personal chef. The sounds of the African night provide the soundtrack. Return to camp by vehicle or on foot with your armed escort.
Wildlife: Lion, wild dog, giraffe, zebra, sable antelope, eland, wildebeest
Accommodation: Same or similar luxury camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Photography: Walking safari perspectives, floodplain landscapes, bush dinner ambience
Special Activity: Walking safari, bush dinner
Morning: Breakfast at camp. Depending on your preference and logistics, you'll take either a scenic drive or a light aircraft transfer from Nyerere to Ruaha National Park. The drive itself is a wildlife experience, passing through changing landscapes from riverine forest to vast baobab-dotted plains.
Afternoon: Game drive en route to your luxury lodge in Ruaha. The park's rugged terrain, ancient baobabs, and the Great Ruaha River create a dramatic backdrop for wildlife viewing. Stop at scenic viewpoints to take in the vastness of Tanzania's largest national park.
Evening: Sundowner on a granite kopje overlooking the Great Ruaha River. Watch elephants and buffalo make their way to the water as the sun sinks below the horizon. Arrive at your camp for dinner.
Wildlife: Elephant, greater kudu, lion, leopard, impala, waterbuck
Accommodation: Luxury camp/lodge in Ruaha (e.g. Jabali Ridge or Kwihala Camp)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Photography: Baobab landscapes, kopje panoramas, Ruaha sunset
Morning (6:00 AM): Early game drive — Ruaha is famous for its high predator density, and the early morning is when lions, leopards, and cheetahs are most active. The park has one of the highest densities of lions and leopards in East Africa, along with a significant population of African wild dogs. The Great Ruaha River area is particularly productive for predator sightings.
Midday: Return to camp for brunch and rest during the heat of the day. Enjoy the camp's facilities — many lodges in Ruaha offer infinity pools overlooking the wilderness, spa treatments, and sundowner decks.
Afternoon: Afternoon tea followed by an evening game drive exploring a different sector of the park. Ruaha's landscapes are incredibly varied — from the Great Ruaha River's sand rivers and rocky gorges to open plains and baobab-studded hills. The late afternoon light is perfect for photography.
Evening: Dinner at camp followed by stargazing — Ruaha's remote location means zero light pollution, offering some of the best night skies in Africa. Your guide will point out constellations and share Maasai star lore.
Wildlife: Lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, elephant, greater kudu, roan antelope, sable antelope, wild dog
Accommodation: Same luxury camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Photography: Predator action, baobab silhouettes at sunset, starlit skies
Morning: Sunrise game drive — your final full day on safari. Visit the Great Ruaha River where large elephant herds, buffalo, and predators are often found. Your guide will make every effort to find any species you haven't yet seen, especially the African wild dog if you haven't spotted them already.
Afternoon: Return to camp for leisure time. Enjoy the pool, book a spa treatment if available, or simply relax on your deck watching wildlife come to the waterhole. Afternoon tea and cake before your final evening activity.
Evening: Farewell sundowner at a scenic spot in Ruaha — raise a glass to the memories made and the wilderness you've explored. Special bush dinner prepared by your camp, featuring a feast of local and international dishes. Your guide joins for a final evening of stories and wildlife discussion.
Wildlife: Last chance for Big Five, wild dog sightings, elephant, giraffe, zebra, antelope
Accommodation: Same luxury camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Photography: Golden hour farewell shoot, baobab silhouettes, camp ambience
Morning: Early breakfast at camp. Transfer to the Ruaha airstrip for your scenic flight back to Dar es Salaam. The aerial views of the southern parks are a fitting finale to your wilderness adventure.
Afternoon: Arrive in Dar es Salaam. Connect to your international flight or extend your stay. Popular extensions include a 3-night Zanzibar beach holiday (30-minute flight) or a day trip to the historic Stone Town.

The Wildlife of Southern Tanzania
Nyerere and Ruaha are home to an extraordinary diversity of wildlife. The southern ecosystem is different from the north — fewer visitors, more space, and unique species.
Ruaha has one of Africa's highest densities of predators and is one of the best places to see African wild dogs. Nyerere is renowned for its elephant herds, hippo and crocodile populations, and diverse antelope species. Together, these parks offer a wildlife experience that rivals anything in East Africa.
African Wild Dog
Ruaha is one of Africa's best places to see these endangered predators. Packs of up to 30 hunt the open plains.
Lion
Ruaha's lion density is among the highest in Africa. Prides of 15-20 are commonly sighted.
Leopard
Excellent leopard sightings in both parks, especially along riverine forests and kopjes.
Elephant
Ruaha hosts over 10,000 elephants. Nyerere has large herds along the Rufiji River.
Buffalo
Large herds in both parks. The buffalo of Ruaha are known for their size and dark coats.
Greater Kudu
Ruaha's signature antelope. Males with magnificent spiral horns are a photographer's favourite.
Sable Antelope
Nyerere has healthy populations of these striking antelope with curved horns.
Roan Antelope
Ruaha is one of the best places in Tanzania to see these rare antelope.
Hippo
Abundant in the Rufiji River (Nyerere) and the Great Ruaha River. Spectacular from boats.
Crocodile
Massive Nile crocodiles in the Rufiji. Boat safaris offer close encounters.
Giraffe
Maasai giraffe are common in both parks, often seen browsing acacia woodlands.
500+ Birds
Nyerere alone has over 440 bird species. Ruaha adds another 400+. Birder's paradise.
Sightings vary by season and are never guaranteed. Our expert guides maximise your chances through real-time tracking and local knowledge.
Explore the Parks
Two of Africa's greatest wilderness areas — each with its own unique character and wildlife.
Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve)
Africa's largest game reserve at 50,000 square kilometres — larger than Switzerland. Nyerere was renamed in 2019 after Tanzania's founding president, but is still widely known as Selous. The park is defined by the Rufiji River, which flows through its heart, creating a network of channels, lakes, and lagoons that sustain an incredible density of wildlife.
Nyerere is one of the few parks in Tanzania where boat safaris and walking safaris are offered alongside traditional game drives. The floodplains, miombo woodlands, and riverine forests host elephant, lion, wild dog, giraffe, hippo, and crocodile. The birdlife is exceptional with over 440 species recorded.
Wildlife highlights: Elephant, hippo, crocodile, wild dog, lion, sable antelope, waterbuck, giraffe
Key activities: Boat safaris, walking safaris, game drives, sundowner cruises
Ruaha National Park
Tanzania's largest national park at 20,000 square kilometres, Ruaha is a land of dramatic contrasts — ancient baobabs, rocky kopjes, sand rivers, and the mighty Great Ruaha River. The park is renowned for having the highest predator density in East Africa, with exceptional populations of lion, leopard, cheetah, and African wild dog.
Ruaha's elephant population exceeds 10,000 — one of the largest concentrations in Africa. The park is also the best place in Tanzania to see greater kudu, roan antelope, and sable antelope. Over 400 bird species have been recorded, including endemics such as the yellow-collared lovebird.
Wildlife highlights: Lion, leopard, wild dog, elephant, greater kudu, cheetah, roan antelope
Key activities: Game drives, walking safaris, sundowners, photographic safaris

Best Time to Visit Southern Tanzania
Nyerere and Ruaha are year-round destinations, but wildlife viewing varies by season.
Dry Season — June to October
This is the peak wildlife viewing season in southern Tanzania. With little rainfall, vegetation thins out and animals concentrate around permanent water sources. The Rufiji River in Nyerere and the Great Ruaha River in Ruaha become wildlife magnets. Predator sightings are at their best as prey species gather at waterholes. Days are sunny with clear blue skies, and temperatures are pleasant (18-28°C). This is the most popular time for photographers.
Wildlife viewing: Excellent for all species, especially predators near water sources.
Crowds: Low compared to northern Tanzania parks. Even in peak season, you'll often have sightings to yourself.
Green Season — November to May
The green season transforms the landscape into a lush paradise. The parks are at their most beautiful, with wildflowers in bloom and the air fresh and clean. This is the best time for birdwatching as migratory species arrive from Europe and northern Africa. Afternoon showers are common but usually brief, and game viewing remains good. Rates are lower and camps have more availability.
Wildlife viewing: Good year-round. Animals are more dispersed but the scenery is spectacular.
Birdwatching: Exceptional November-April with migratory birds present.
Photography: Green season offers dramatic skies, lush landscapes, and unique lighting conditions.
