Your 6-Day Machame Adventure
The Whiskey Route packs diverse landscapes into 6 unforgettable days.
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
5-7 hrs
The Machame Route begins at Machame Gate (1,640m) in lush montane rainforest. Known as the Whiskey Route this is the most scenic path up Kilimanjaro. After registration you enter a world of towering trees and twisted vines.
The trail climbs steadily through the forest crossing wooden bridges over rushing streams. Keep an eye out for blue monkeys and colourful turacos. The path is steeper and muddier than Marangu setting the tone for a more adventurous trek.
Machame Camp appears at 2,850m perched on a small plateau amidst the trees. Tents are already set up by your support crew. Enjoy a hot dinner in the mess tent as darkness falls.
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
5-7 hrs
The forest thins as you climb higher giving way to heath and moorland. The trail emerges onto the Shira Plateau a vast volcanic caldera offering your first expansive views of the mountain.
Today you leave the trees behind and enter rolling hills of volcanic rock. The sun beats down fiercely. Your guide reminds you to drink water constantly and apply sunscreen. The views of Kibo grow more impressive.
Shira Camp (3,840m) sits on the edge of the plateau offering spectacular sunset views over the plains below. Your cook serves a hot carbohydrate-rich dinner.
Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
7-8 hrs
This is a crucial acclimatisation day following climb high sleep low. You head to the iconic Lava Tower (4,640m) a 150-metre volcanic plug. The terrain is alpine desert loose scree and thin dry air.
Reaching Lava Tower is both a physical challenge and altitude test. After a rest and snack at the base you descend into the lush Barranco Valley.
Barranco Camp (3,960m) sits in the shadow of the massive Barranco Wall which you climb tomorrow. The valley is nicknamed the Garden of the Senecios for its giant groundsels. Among the most photogenic scenery on the route.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
4-5 hrs
Morning begins with the famous Breakfast Wall the Barranco Wall. Despite its intimidating appearance it is a non-technical scramble requiring hands for balance. Your guide navigates confidently.
The climb takes about an hour and the reward at the top is stunning views of Kibo southern glaciers. The trail then undulates across the Karanga Valley crossing small streams.
Karanga Camp (4,035m) is the last water point before summit. The afternoon is for rest and final preparation. Your guide checks your gear and briefs you on the summit plan.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
4-5 hrs
A short but important day. The trail climbs steadily to Barafu Camp the high camp at 4,673m. The landscape is stark alpine desert rocks scree and the occasional hardy lichen.
Barafu Camp (ice in Swahili) is perched on a rocky ridge with no vegetation. Your tent is set up on sloping stony ground. After an early dinner you try to sleep from 6 PM to 11 PM.
Sleep is difficult at this altitude but rest is vital. Your guide wakes you at midnight with hot tea and biscuits before the summit attempt.
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
12-16 hrs
Midnight. The world is black and frozen. You step out into the biting wind headlamp cutting a narrow cone of light. The trail ahead is a line of tiny lights other climbers all moving towards the same goal.
The climb to Stella Point is the toughest section six hours of switchbacks up steep scree. The guides maintain morale with quiet encouragement. Temperatures hover around -15C.
Dawn breaks as you approach Stella Point (5,756m). The sky turns purple to orange as glaciers catch fire. From Stella Point it is one hour along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The highest point in Africa. Descent to Mweka Camp is long but your heart soars.
