Day 1

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

5-7 hrs
Machame rainforest
Altitude: 1,640m -> 2,850m Distance: 10 km Walking Time: 5-7 hours Meals: Lunch, Dinner Accommodation: Machame Camp

Begin at Machame Gate (1,640m) in lush montane rainforest. Known as the Whiskey Route this is the most scenic path up Kilimanjaro with towering trees twisted vines and the earthy scent of wet moss.

The trail climbs steadily through the forest crossing wooden bridges over rushing streams. Blue monkeys and colourful turacos inhabit the canopy. The path is steeper and muddier than Marangu.

Machame Camp at 2,850m sits on a small plateau amidst the trees. Your support crew has tents ready. Hot dinner in the mess tent as darkness falls.

Expert TipEnsure your sleeping bag is rated to at least -10C. It gets colder than expected even at this elevation.
Day 2

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

5-7 hrs
Shira Plateau
Altitude: 2,850m -> 3,840m Distance: 9 km Walking Time: 5-7 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodation: Shira Camp

The forest thins giving way to heath and moorland. The trail emerges onto the vast Shira Plateau a volcanic caldera offering your first expansive views of the mountain.

You leave the trees behind and enter rolling hills of volcanic rock. The sun beats down fiercely. Drink water constantly and apply sunscreen. The views of Kibo grow more impressive with every step.

Shira Camp (3,840m) offers spectacular sunset views over the plains below. Hot carbohydrate-rich dinner in the mess tent.

Expert TipUV at 3,840m is 50% higher than sea level. Apply SPF 50+ to all exposed skin including lips.
Day 3

Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

7-8 hrs
Lava Tower
Altitude: 3,840m -> 4,640m -> 3,960m Distance: 11 km Walking Time: 7-8 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodation: Barranco Camp

Crucial acclimatisation day following climb high sleep low. You head to Lava Tower (4,640m) a 150-metre volcanic plug. The terrain is alpine desert loose scree and thin air.

After a rest at the base you descend into the lush Barranco Valley. The descent is a relief after the high altitude.

Barranco Camp (3,960m) sits in the shadow of the massive Barranco Wall. The valley is lush with giant groundsels. Among the most photogenic scenery on the entire route.

Expert TipThe climb to Lava Tower aids acclimatisation. Report any severe symptoms to your guide immediately.
Day 4

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

4-5 hrs
Barranco Wall
Altitude: 3,960m -> 4,035m Distance: 6 km Walking Time: 4-5 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodation: Karanga Camp

Morning begins with the Breakfast Wall the Barranco Wall. Despite appearances it is a non-technical scramble requiring hands for balance in a few sections.

The climb takes about an hour. The reward at the top is stunning views of Kibo southern glaciers. The trail then undulates across the Karanga Valley.

Karanga Camp (4,035m) is the last water point before the summit. The afternoon is for rest and final preparation for summit night.

Expert TipThe Barranco Wall is not as scary as it looks. Trust your guide and keep three points of contact.
Day 5

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

4-5 hrs
Barafu Camp
Altitude: 4,035m -> 4,673m Distance: 4 km Walking Time: 4-5 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodation: Barafu Camp

Short but important day climbing steadily to Barafu Camp the high camp at 4,673m. The landscape is stark alpine desert rocks and scree.

Barafu means ice in Swahili. The camp is perched on a rocky ridge with no vegetation. Your tent is set up on sloping ground.

After an early dinner you try to sleep from around 6 PM to 11 PM. Your guide wakes you at midnight with hot tea for the summit attempt.

Expert TipWear all your layers inside your sleeping bag. Put your water bottle inside to prevent it from freezing.
Day 6 Summit Day

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Barafu Camp

10-12 hrs
Summit day
Altitude: 4,673m -> 5,895m -> 4,673m Distance: 14 km Walking Time: 10-12 hours Meals: Box Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodation: Barafu Camp

Midnight summit push. The trail ahead is a line of tiny lights other climbers moving towards the same goal. The climb to Stella Point is the toughest section.

Six hours of switchbacks up steep scree. Guides maintain morale with quiet encouragement. Temperatures around -15C with wind chill.

Dawn breaks as you approach Stella Point (5,756m). From here it is one hour along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The highest point in Africa. Descent back to Barafu for a well-earned rest.

Expert TipThe descent is harder on your knees. Use trekking poles walk with bent knees and take short deliberate steps.
Day 7

Barafu Camp to Mweka Gate

5-7 hrs
Mweka descent
Altitude: 4,673m -> 1,640m Distance: 13 km Walking Time: 5-7 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

The final descent through the lush Mweka Forest. The trail is steep and often muddy. Take care on the slippery sections.

The air grows warmer and thicker with every kilometre. You shed layers as the forest envelops you. Bird calls and the rustle of monkeys accompany you down.

At Mweka Gate you sign out and receive your summit certificate. Your driver takes you back to Moshi for a hot shower and celebration dinner.

Expert TipDo not book a flight on the same day. Stay in Moshi or Arusha to rest and celebrate your achievement.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Machame 7-Day harder than the 6-day?+
Absolutely. The Machame 7-Day is suitable for beginners with a reasonable level of fitness. You don’t need prior mountaineering experience — just a willingness to walk uphill for 4–8 hours per day. We recommend starting a fitness routine (walking, jogging, stair-climbing) at least 8 weeks before your departure.
Is equipment rental available?+
Yes, we offer high-quality rental gear including sleeping bags (-10°C rated), trekking poles, waterproof jackets, gaiters, and headlamps. Please let us know in advance what you need so we can ensure availability. Rental costs range from $10–$40 per item per trip.
What meals are provided on the mountain?+
Three meals per day: breakfast (porridge, eggs, toast, tea/coffee), lunch (packed picnic with sandwiches, fruit, snacks), and dinner (soup, stew, vegetables, rice or pasta, dessert). Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are available — just inform us when booking.
Can we store luggage during the climb?+
Yes free luggage storage at our Moshi office. Pack a duffel for the mountain and leave the rest.
Do I need travel insurance?+
Yes, travel insurance is mandatory. Your policy must cover high-altitude trekking up to 6,000m, emergency evacuation by helicopter, and trip cancellation. We recommend World Nomads, Allianz, or AXA for climbers. Please bring a copy of your policy to the briefing.
Can vegetarians join the climb?+
Absolutely. We cater to all dietary requirements including vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, and gluten-free. Our mountain cooks are experienced in preparing nutritious and tasty plant-based meals at altitude. Just let us know your dietary needs at the time of booking.
Can I store my luggage in Moshi during the climb?+
Yes, free luggage storage is included. You can leave your main suitcase at our Moshi office during the trek. We recommend packing a separate duffel for the mountain (15kg max per person, carried by porters) and leaving the rest in secure storage.
What is the toilet situation on the mountain?+
On the Machame Route, each hut has flush toilets (though simple). Along the trail, there are public pit latrines at designated rest points. We recommend bringing a small pack of tissues and hand sanitiser. Summit night has no toilet facilities — plan accordingly.
How do I pay the remaining balance?+
After the 30% deposit, you can pay the balance via bank transfer, credit card (Visa/Mastercard/Amex), PayPal, or cryptocurrency. Payment schedules are flexible — we’ll work with you to find a plan that suits your needs.
What happens if I get altitude sickness?+
Our guides are trained in wilderness first-aid and carry emergency oxygen and a pulse oximeter to monitor your blood oxygen levels. If symptoms become severe, the guide will escort you down immediately — the best treatment for altitude sickness is descent. We carry emergency rescue insurance for helicopter evacuation if needed.
Can I extend my trip with a safari or Zanzibar?+
Yes! Many climbers combine their Kilimanjaro climb with a Tanzania safari (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire) or a beach holiday in Zanzibar. We offer discounted package deals — ask our team for a combined itinerary quote.
