The Datoga are Tanzania's master metalworkers â a Nilotic people who have forged iron and brass for countless generations. At their remote homesteads, raw scrap metal is transformed into arrowheads, spear tips, bangles and rings using nothing but handmade goat-skin bellows, stone hammers, and charcoal fires. Women create some of Tanzania's most exquisite beadwork, where every colour and pattern tells a story of clan identity, age, and status. Try pumping the bellows, hammering red-hot metal, or threading beads under the guidance of artisans whose techniques date back centuries. The Datoga are reserved but deeply warm once engaged, and the pride they take in their craftsmanship is profoundly moving.
