Your 5-Day Umbwe Adventure
The Direct Route. The most challenging path to the Roof of Africa.
Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp
5-7 hrs
The Umbwe Route is the most direct and challenging path up Kilimanjaro. It begins at Umbwe Gate and immediately climbs steeply through dense rainforest.
The trail is narrow and steep often requiring hands for balance on root-laced sections. This is a route for experienced trekkers seeking a true challenge.
Umbwe Camp (2,940m) is a small clearing on a steep ridge. The camp is basic and the air is already noticeably thinner.
Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp
5-7 hrs
The trail climbs steeply out of the forest onto a narrow ridge with dramatic drops on both sides. The views of the Great Rift Valley are staggering.
You emerge above the treeline into moorland with giant groundsels and lobelias. The trail joins the Machame Route near Barranco Camp.
Barranco Camp (3,960m) is surrounded by the famous giant senecios. The Barranco Wall looms above ready for tomorrow morning.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
4-5 hrs
Scramble up the Barranco Wall in the morning. This is a fun non-technical climb with excellent views from the top.
Descend into the Karanga Valley and climb to Karanga Camp. Views of the southern glaciers of Kibo.
Karanga Camp (4,035m). Last water point before summit. Rest and prepare.
Karanga Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
14-16 hrs
Move to Barafu Camp then begin midnight summit push. The steep scree to Stella Point is relentless.
Dawn breaks as you reach the crater rim. Walk along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
You conquered Kilimanjaro via the most challenging route. Descent to Mweka Camp.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi
3-4 hrs
Final descent through lush Mweka rainforest. Steep and muddy sections.
Sign out at Mweka Gate. Receive summit certificates. Transfer to Moshi.
Celebrate your Umbwe summit. You took the hardest route and conquered it.
