Kilimanjaro Private Machame 7-Day
The Machame 7-Day private climb offers ~85% summit success with Camping accommodation on the Whiskey Route.
Machame Route – The Whiskey Way to the Roof of Africa
The Machame Route is the most popular path up Mount Kilimanjaro, approaching the mountain from the southwest through Machame Gate. Covering approximately 62 kilometres from gate to gate, it passes through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and arctic summit zones, making it one of the most scenic routes on the mountain.
Machame is famous for its climb-high, sleep-low profile. The trek rises to Lava Tower at 4,630 metres for acclimatization before dropping to Barranco Camp, then continues along the Southern Circuit over the Great Barranco Wall, through Karanga and up to Barafu high camp.
It earned the nickname Whiskey Route because it is tougher than the Marangu Coca-Cola Route — steeper in places, fully tented, and more demanding. In return it delivers dramatic scenery, from the Shira Plateau views to the ice fields above Barranco. Expect company on the trail in high season; a private climb lets your group set its own pace through the crowds.
With Kizza Adventure, your private guide manages the pace, the acclimatization rhythm and the summit-night timing for your group alone.
6–8 Days — Pick the Machame Pace That Fits You
The Machame Route is normally climbed in 6 to 8 days. Extra days on this route go straight into acclimatization, which is the single biggest factor in reaching Uhuru Peak.
At Kizza Adventure, we recommend the duration according to your fitness, experience and available time.
6 Days — Compact and Demanding
The 6-day itinerary skips the Karanga Camp night, combining Barranco to Barafu into one long day. It suits fit, experienced trekkers who are comfortable with bigger days and less recovery time.
7 Days — The Classic Choice (This Itinerary)
Our 7-day Machame climb keeps the Karanga Camp night, splitting the Southern Circuit into manageable stages. This is the best balance of time, acclimatization and enjoyment, and the version most first-time Kilimanjaro trekkers choose.
8 Days — Maximum Comfort on Machame
An 8-day program adds even more breathing room before the summit push. Ideal if you want the slowest sensible pace on this route and the most relaxed evenings in camp.
With Kizza Adventure, the goal is a safe, well-paced ascent — not the fastest one. Choose 6 days for a compact challenge or up to 8 days for a more forgiving climb.
Camping Only — Nights Under Kilimanjaro's Stars
Machame is a camping-only route. There are no huts here as on Marangu — every night is spent in tents, from Machame Camp through Shira, Barranco, Karanga and Barafu to the final night at Mweka Camp in the forest.
At Kizza Adventure, our mountain crew carries, pitches and strikes your camp each day, so you walk into a ready campsite every afternoon.
Our camping experience includes:
- Quality four-season mountain tents
- Comfortable sleeping mats with rental sleeping bags available
- Dining tent with table seating for meals
- Freshly cooked breakfast, lunch and dinner every day
- Professional cook, guides and porters
- Clean, organized campsites at every stage
- Emergency oxygen and first-aid support in camp
Camping is part of the Machame character — falling asleep to the sounds of the mountain and waking to sunrise over the Shira Plateau or the ice fields above Barranco.
With Kizza Adventure, you get authentic tented camping run with professional organization, so you rest well and recover fully between trekking days.
Challenging — Steep, Honest Trekking With Expert Support
Machame is a challenging route, though it requires no technical climbing skills. The difficulty comes from steep trail sections, long days and altitude — day two up the Shira ridge is notoriously steep, and summit night climbs loose scree above Barafu.
The signature obstacle is the Great Barranco Wall, a near-260-metre rock face you scramble on day four. It looks intimidating but needs no ropes or technical gear — hands free of poles, steady feet, and your guide beside you the whole way.
At Kizza Adventure, our guides set a slow pole-pole pace, watch every climber for altitude symptoms, and adjust the day to your group rather than a fixed timetable.
To prepare for the challenge, you should have:
- Solid cardiovascular fitness for 5–8 hour trekking days
- Leg strength for steep ascents and the summit-night descent
- Broken-in waterproof hiking boots
- Warm layers for freezing summit temperatures
- Patience to walk slowly even when you feel strong
- Trust in your guide's pace and safety calls
Machame rewards the well-prepared. Train with hill walking and stair climbing for 8–12 weeks, and the Whiskey Route becomes the adventure of a lifetime.
Uhuru Peak via Stella Point — 5,895 Metres
On Machame, summit night begins around midnight at Barafu Camp. You climb the steep Kibo scree slope by headlamp for six to eight hours, reaching Stella Point on the crater rim at 5,756 metres just as dawn breaks over Mawenzi.
From Stella Point the trail follows the crater rim past glaciers to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet) — the highest point in Africa. Reaching Stella earns the green certificate; pushing on to Uhuru earns the gold one.
The descent returns past Barafu for rest, then continues down the Mweka descent route to Mweka Camp in the forest — a huge day of up to 18 kilometres from summit to camp.
Reaching Uhuru Peak via Machame means:
- Standing at 5,895 metres above sea level
- Sunrise over Mawenzi from Stella Point
- Walking the crater rim between two summits
- Earning the gold Uhuru Peak certificate
- Completing Africa's highest trek via its most famous route
At Kizza Adventure, summit night is guided one step at a time — hot drinks at Barafu, steady pacing on the scree, and your guide beside you from midnight to the signboard and safely back down.
Your Private Group on the Busiest Trail
Machame is the most-travelled route on Kilimanjaro, which makes a private group of 1–6 people especially valuable. While large mixed departures move at one fixed rhythm, your climb is organized entirely around your party.
Whether you are a solo traveller, a couple, a family or friends, you trek with your own dedicated guide and crew — never merged with strangers.
Why private matters on Machame:
Your Own Pace in the Crowds
Your guide sets a rhythm for your group alone — passing slow parties, resting when you need to, never rushed or held back.
Personal Altitude Monitoring
Daily health checks and honest advice for each climber, from the steep Shira ridge to summit night.
Flexible Camp Routine
Meal times, rest stops and wake-up calls arranged around your group, not a big-party schedule.
A Shared Summit Story
From the rainforest at Machame Gate to Uhuru Peak, the whole journey belongs to your people.
At Kizza Adventure, private on Machame means the mountain's busiest route still feels like your own expedition.
~85% Summit Success — The 7-Day Karanga Advantage
For our 7-day Machame private climb, we use an estimated ~85% summit success benchmark. The extra night at Karanga Camp — the key difference from the 6-day itinerary — splits the Southern Circuit and gives your body measurably better acclimatization before Barafu.
Those numbers inform but never promise. Altitude affects every climber differently, and weather on summit night can change the equation.
Your summit success depends on:
- The Karanga night breaking up the long Barranco-to-Barafu push
- Climb-high, sleep-low days at Lava Tower and the Barranco Wall
- A slow pole-pole pace set by your private guide
- Hydration and steady eating at altitude
- Physical preparation before the trip
- Proper summit-night clothing against cold and wind
- Listening to your body and your guide's advice
The 7-day Machame exists for one reason: giving a demanding route the time it needs. That Karanga night is where summits are made.
At Kizza Adventure, we measure success in safe summits — steady pacing, honest altitude monitoring, and a guide who turns you around if the mountain says no.

Your 7-Day Machame Adventure
85% summit success on the Whiskey Route.
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
5-7 hrs
Begin at Machame Gate (1,640m) in lush montane rainforest. Known as the Whiskey Route this is the most scenic path up Kilimanjaro with towering trees twisted vines and the earthy scent of wet moss.
The trail climbs steadily through the forest crossing wooden bridges over rushing streams. Blue monkeys and colourful turacos inhabit the canopy. The path is steeper and muddier than Marangu.
Machame Camp at 2,850m sits on a small plateau amidst the trees. Your support crew has tents ready. Hot dinner in the mess tent as darkness falls.
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
5-7 hrs
The forest thins giving way to heath and moorland. The trail emerges onto the vast Shira Plateau a volcanic caldera offering your first expansive views of the mountain.
You leave the trees behind and enter rolling hills of volcanic rock. The sun beats down fiercely. Drink water constantly and apply sunscreen. The views of Kibo grow more impressive with every step.
Shira Camp (3,840m) offers spectacular sunset views over the plains below. Hot carbohydrate-rich dinner in the mess tent.
Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
7-8 hrs
Crucial acclimatisation day following climb high sleep low. You head to Lava Tower (4,640m) a 150-metre volcanic plug. The terrain is alpine desert loose scree and thin air.
After a rest at the base you descend into the lush Barranco Valley. The descent is a relief after the high altitude.
Barranco Camp (3,960m) sits in the shadow of the massive Barranco Wall. The valley is lush with giant groundsels. Among the most photogenic scenery on the entire route.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
4-5 hrs
Morning begins with the Breakfast Wall the Barranco Wall. Despite appearances it is a non-technical scramble requiring hands for balance in a few sections.
The climb takes about an hour. The reward at the top is stunning views of Kibo southern glaciers. The trail then undulates across the Karanga Valley.
Karanga Camp (4,035m) is the last water point before the summit. The afternoon is for rest and final preparation for summit night.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
4-5 hrs
Short but important day climbing steadily to Barafu Camp the high camp at 4,673m. The landscape is stark alpine desert rocks and scree.
Barafu means ice in Swahili. The camp is perched on a rocky ridge with no vegetation. Your tent is set up on sloping ground.
After an early dinner you try to sleep from around 6 PM to 11 PM. Your guide wakes you at midnight with hot tea for the summit attempt.
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Barafu Camp
10-12 hrs
Midnight summit push. The trail ahead is a line of tiny lights other climbers moving towards the same goal. The climb to Stella Point is the toughest section.
Six hours of switchbacks up steep scree. Guides maintain morale with quiet encouragement. Temperatures around -15C with wind chill.
Dawn breaks as you approach Stella Point (5,756m). From here it is one hour along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The highest point in Africa. Descent back to Barafu for a well-earned rest.
Barafu Camp to Mweka Gate
5-7 hrs
The final descent through the lush Mweka Forest. The trail is steep and often muddy. Take care on the slippery sections.
The air grows warmer and thicker with every kilometre. You shed layers as the forest envelops you. Bird calls and the rustle of monkeys accompany you down.
At Mweka Gate you sign out and receive your summit certificate. Your driver takes you back to Moshi for a hot shower and celebration dinner.

Understanding the Climb
The Machame 7-Day is rated challenging but achievable for anyone with reasonable fitness and determination.
Fitness Required
You should be comfortable walking 4–8 hours per day over uneven terrain. Start a training routine 8–12 weeks before your climb — focus on hiking, stair-climbing, and cardiovascular exercise.
Technical Level
No technical climbing skills are needed. The Machame Route is a non-technical trek. The trail is well-graded and manageable with a moderate difficulty that most fit beginners can handle — your guide will assist you.
Altitude Challenges
The main challenge is altitude. Our 7-day itinerary includes proper acclimatisation with a gradual ascent profile. You climb high, sleep low, and follow the pole-pole (slowly, slowly) philosophy.
Mental Preparation
Summit night is mentally demanding — a 12–16 hour push in darkness and cold. Trust your training, trust your guide, and take it one step at a time. A positive mindset is your most important gear.
How We Keep You Safe
Your safety is our highest priority. Our certified guides follow strict medical protocols on every climb.
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)
AMS can affect anyone regardless of fitness. Symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. Our guides are trained to recognise early warning signs and take immediate action — the only cure is descent.
Acclimatisation & Hydration
Our 7-day itinerary is designed for optimal acclimatisation with a gradual ascent profile. Drink 4–5 litres of water daily. We carry filtered water and remind you to drink regularly — clear urine is a good sign.
Daily Health Checks
Twice-daily health checks with pulse oximeter readings, blood pressure, and AMS symptom assessment. Any sign of altitude sickness triggers immediate response and assisted descent if needed.
Emergency Procedures
We carry emergency oxygen, comprehensive medical kits, and satellite phones. Pre-established evacuation routes with standby vehicles. Mandatory travel insurance with mountain evacuation coverage required.
