The Experience

What It Feels Like to Trek Overnight

Close your eyes and imagine — this is what the Lemosho 2-Day Short Trek actually feels like.

Day 1 begins like any adventure — the early morning pickup, the scenic drive through Chagga villages and coffee plantations, the anticipation building as Londorossi Gate appears through the mist. But when you step onto the Lemosho trail, you feel it immediately — this is different. The forest is alive with birdsong, the air is cool and fragrant, and ahead of you lies not just a day hike, but a night under the stars.

The hike to Mti Mkubwa Camp is a journey through pristine rainforest that feels untouched by time. Giant podocarpus trees rise like cathedral pillars, their trunks wrapped in usnea moss. Your guide points out colobus monkeys in the canopy, stops to explain the medicinal plants used by the Chagga, and pauses at the stream crossing where bushbuck come to drink. After 3-4 hours of steady walking, you arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp — a beautiful forest clearing surrounded by enormous trees. Your camp crew has already set up the tents, and the smell of cooking dinner fills the air.

Evening at camp is magical. As darkness falls, the forest sounds change — the birds settle, nocturnal insects begin their chorus, and if you are lucky, you might hear the distant call of a bushbaby. Dinner is served under the stars, followed by stories around the campfire. The temperature drops to a cool 5-12°C, perfect for zipping into your sleeping bag and listening to the gentle rustle of the forest.

Day 2 starts early with a hot breakfast and the striking of camp. The trail climbs beyond the forest line, emerging into the heath zone with spectacular views of Shira Plateau and the Kibo massif. At about 3,500m, you reach the viewpoint — a vast, open landscape that feels like another world. After photos and a well-deserved rest, you descend back through the forest to Londorossi Gate, arriving in Moshi by early evening with memories that will last a lifetime.

Destination Guide

Everything About Lemosho

The Lemosho area on Kilimanjaro western side is renowned for its pristine forest, abundant wildlife, and remote wilderness character.

Londorossi Gate (2,100m)

The remote western entry point to Kilimanjaro National Park, also called Lemosho Gate. Far less busy than Marangu Gate, this is where your 2-day adventure begins.

Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,750m)

Swahili for Big Tree Camp, this is the first campsite on the Lemosho Route. Set in a beautiful forest clearing surrounded by enormous podocarpus trees. You will spend the night here, camping under the stars.

Shira Plateau (~3,500m)

The highlight of Day 2. The Shira Plateau is one of Kilimanjaro three volcanic cones, now extinct. The viewpoint offers breathtaking panoramic views of Kibo peak and the western breach.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

Kilimanjaro National Park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. The entire park, including the Lemosho Route, is protected for its outstanding natural value and unique ecosystems.

Geology & Volcano

Kilimanjaro is a stratovolcano formed over 1 million years ago. The Lemosho Route crosses the western flank, passing through ancient lava flows from the Shira volcanic cone.

Rainforest Ecosystem

The montane rainforest zone (1,800m-2,800m) on the western side is particularly lush due to higher rainfall, creating dense moss-draped forest with towering podocarpus and giant ferns.

Chagga Culture

The western slopes are home to the Chagga people who have farmed these fertile lands for centuries. The drive passes through traditional villages, banana plantations, and coffee groves.

Climate & Weather

The rainforest zone is warm and humid year-round (14-27°C). Night temperatures at Mti Mkubwa Camp drop to 5-12°C. The western side receives more rainfall making the forest lush.

Your 2-Day Adventure

Short Trek Itinerary

Two days exploring Kilimanjaro most pristine rainforest zone, camping overnight, and hiking to the Shira Plateau viewpoint.

Day 1 — Ascent

Moshi to Mti Mkubwa Camp

3–4 hrs hiking
Lemosho rainforest trail
Pickup: 6:30 AM Drive: 90 min Distance: 12 km Altitude Gain: 2,100m to 2,750m Meals: Lunch + Dinner

Your guide picks you up from your Moshi hotel at 6:30 AM. The scenic 90-minute drive takes you through Chagga villages, coffee plantations, and banana groves with stunning mountain views. At Londorossi Gate, your guide handles park registration while you prepare for the adventure ahead.

The trail winds through pristine montane rainforest for 12 km to Mti Mkubwa Camp. Towering podocarpus trees drape the canopy, crossing streams via log bridges. Your guide points out colobus monkeys, explains the rainforest ecosystem, and shares stories about Kilimanjaro geological history. You will arrive at camp by early afternoon.

Your camp crew welcomes you with hot drinks. The tents are already set up in a beautiful forest clearing surrounded by giant trees. Take time to explore the camp, rest, and soak in the peaceful atmosphere of this remote wilderness setting.

Pro TipWalk at a steady pace (pole pole) and drink plenty of water. The gentle incline is manageable — enjoy the journey rather than rushing.
Evening at Camp

Camping at Mti Mkubwa Camp

Overnight Wilderness
Camping at Mti Mkubwa
Elevation: 2,750m Temperature: 5–12°C Meals: Hot dinner + breakfast Activities: Stargazing, campfire

As afternoon fades into evening, your camp crew prepares a hot dinner — fresh soup, pasta or rice with vegetables, and fruit. The dining tent is set up with camp chairs, and the meals are served with warm hospitality.

After dinner, gather around the campfire. Your guide shares stories about life on Kilimanjaro, Chagga folklore, and tales from the trail. The forest comes alive at night — listen for the calls of nocturnal animals and the crackling of the fire. Without city lights, the stars above Mti Mkubwa Camp are absolutely breathtaking.

Your tent is comfortable and waterproof, with a thick sleeping mat. Zip yourself into your sleeping bag as the temperature drops. Fall asleep to the gentle sounds of the rainforest — a truly immersive wilderness experience.

Pro TipBring a warm sleeping bag (rated to 0°C) and thermal layers for the night. A headlamp is essential for moving around camp after dark.
Day 2 — Summit Push + Descent

Mti Mkubwa → Shira Viewpoint → Gate → Moshi

5–6 hrs
Shira Plateau viewpoint
Distance: 10 km Altitude Gain: 2,750m to 3,500m Terrain: Forest to heath zone Meals: Breakfast + lunch

Wake up to the sounds of the forest and a hot cup of tea or coffee. Your crew prepares a hearty breakfast — porridge, eggs, toast, and fruit. After breakfast, you help strike camp (your crew handles the heavy work), and set off for the Day 2 adventure.

The trail climbs beyond the rainforest into the heath zone. The vegetation changes dramatically — giant groundsels, lobelias, and heather replace the towering trees. As you ascend, the views expand. The Shira Plateau opens up before you, and on a clear day, Kibo peak dominates the skyline. At the viewpoint (~3,500m), you will stop for photos, snacks, and a moment of pure awe.

The descent takes you back through the same stunning terrain. The walk is faster downhill, and you will notice details you missed on the way up. Arrive at Londorossi Gate in the early afternoon. Your driver is waiting for the 90-minute journey back to Moshi, arriving at your hotel by approximately 5:00-6:00 PM.

Pro TipStart Day 2 early for the best chance of clear views from the Shira viewpoint. Morning light on Kibo is spectacular.
Wildlife & Nature

Rainforest Wildlife Guide

The Lemosho trail winds through the most pristine montane rainforest on Kilimanjaro — home to abundant primates, colourful birds, and unique flora.

Colobus Monkeys

Our guides know the exact trees where colobus troops feed on the Lemosho trail — typically the giant fig trees around the 3km mark. Their long white tails create breathtaking leaps between branches.

Hartlaub Turaco

This vibrant bird with glossy green-and-purple plumage and a bright red beak is common on the Lemosho trail. The western forest quieter nature means you will hear their distinctive calls echoing through the trees.

Giant Podocarpus Trees

The Lemosho trail is famous for its enormous podocarpus trees, some over 40 metres tall. Their trunks are draped in usnea moss, creating a fairy-tale atmosphere.

Endemic Plants

The rainforest zone hosts unique flora including giant heather, moss-covered lobelias, and the iconic Kilimanjaro impatiens — a bright pink flower found only on this mountain.

Silvery-cheeked Hornbill

This large bird with a striking casque on its beak is frequently spotted in the forest canopy on the Lemosho trail. Its loud wingbeats echo through the quiet forest.

Blue Monkeys & Bushbuck

Blue monkeys travel in troops through the mid-canopy, while bushbuck (a small antelope) are often spotted near stream crossings on the remote Lemosho trail.

Difficulty & Fitness

Who Can Do This Trek

The Lemosho 2-Day Short Trek is rated moderate to challenging — two consecutive days of hiking with an overnight camp at 2,750m.

Two-Day Commitment

You will hike 12 km on Day 1 and 10 km on Day 2, including a steep ascent to the Shira viewpoint. The trail is well-graded but the cumulative distance and altitude gain require reasonable fitness.

Minimum Age

Active teens aged 14+ recommended due to the overnight camping component and two consecutive days of hiking. Younger children may find the altitude and camping conditions challenging.

Moderate to Challenging

You do not need mountaineering experience, but a good fitness level is recommended. Regular walking, jogging, or hiking preparation in the weeks before will ensure you enjoy the experience.

Fitness Preparation

A few weeks of regular walking, jogging, or stair-climbing will prepare you well. The pace is slow and steady (pole pole) with frequent breaks.

Altitude Awareness

The Shira viewpoint at 3,500m is high enough that some people may feel mild altitude symptoms. However, you descend the same day and sleep at 2,750m on night one, which aids acclimatisation.

Camping Comfort

If you are new to camping, do not worry — our crew handles everything. Tents are comfortable and waterproof. Night temperatures drop to 5-12°C but a good sleeping bag keeps you warm.

The Lemosho 2-Day Short Trek is the most remote overnight trek on Kilimanjaro. Starting at Londorossi Gate (2,100m) on the western side of the mountain, the trail ascends through untouched montane rainforest to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,750m) for a night of camping under the stars. On Day 2, you hike to the Shira Plateau viewpoint (3,500m) before descending back to the gate — a total of 22 km over two days. This short trek is perfect for nature lovers, camping enthusiasts, and travellers based in Moshi who want a true wilderness overnight experience.

Combine your short trek with a Tanzania safari in the Serengeti or a Zanzibar beach holiday. Many visitors use the Lemosho 2-Day Short Trek as a warm-up before tackling longer Kilimanjaro routes or as a standalone camping adventure. For questions or bookings, contact our team on WhatsApp.
