5-7 hrs
Machame rainforest
Altitude: 1,640m -> 2,850m Distance: 10 km Walking Time: 5-7 hours Meals: Lunch, Dinner Accommodation: Machame Camp

The Machame Route begins at Machame Gate (1,640m) in lush montane rainforest. Known as the Whiskey Route this is the most scenic path up Kilimanjaro. After registration you enter a world of towering trees and twisted vines.

The trail climbs steadily through the forest crossing wooden bridges over rushing streams. Keep an eye out for blue monkeys and colourful turacos. The path is steeper and muddier than Marangu setting the tone for a more adventurous trek.

Machame Camp appears at 2,850m perched on a small plateau amidst the trees. Tents are already set up by your support crew. Enjoy a hot dinner in the mess tent as darkness falls.

Expert TipThis is a camping route ensure your sleeping bag is rated to at least -10C. It gets colder than expected even at this elevation.

5-7 hrs
Shira Plateau
Altitude: 2,850m -> 3,840m Distance: 9 km Walking Time: 5-7 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodation: Shira Camp

The forest thins as you climb higher giving way to heath and moorland. The trail emerges onto the Shira Plateau a vast volcanic caldera offering your first expansive views of the mountain.

Shira Camp (3,840m) sits on the edge of the plateau offering spectacular sunset views over the plains below. Your cook serves a hot carbohydrate-rich dinner.

Expert TipUV levels at 3,840m are 50% higher than sea level. Apply SPF 50+ to all exposed skin including lips. Sunburn at altitude can ruin summit chances.

Lava Tower
Altitude: 3,840m -> 4,640m -> 3,960m Distance: 11 km Walking Time: 7-8 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodation: Barranco Camp

This is a crucial acclimatisation day following climb high sleep low. You head to the iconic Lava Tower (4,640m) a 150-metre volcanic plug. The terrain is alpine desert loose scree and thin dry air.

Barranco Camp (3,960m) sits in the shadow of the massive Barranco Wall which you climb tomorrow. The valley is nicknamed the Garden of the Senecios for its giant groundsels. Among the most photogenic scenery on the route.

Expert TipThe climb to Lava Tower aids acclimatisation. Headache or nausea is normal but report severe symptoms to your guide. The descent to Barranco will make you feel better.

Karanga Camp (4,035m) is the last water point before summit. The afternoon is for rest and final preparation. Your guide checks your gear and briefs you on the summit plan.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Machame Route suitable for beginners?+
Absolutely. The Machame 6-Day is suitable for beginners with a reasonable level of fitness. You don’t need prior mountaineering experience — just a willingness to walk uphill for 4–8 hours per day. We recommend starting a fitness routine (walking, jogging, stair-climbing) at least 8 weeks before your departure.
Is equipment rental available?+
Yes, we offer high-quality rental gear including sleeping bags (-10°C rated), trekking poles, waterproof jackets, gaiters, and headlamps. Please let us know in advance what you need so we can ensure availability. Rental costs range from $10–$40 per item per trip.
What meals are provided on the mountain?+
Three meals per day: breakfast (porridge, eggs, toast, tea/coffee), lunch (packed picnic with sandwiches, fruit, snacks), and dinner (soup, stew, vegetables, rice or pasta, dessert). Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are available — just inform us when booking.
Can I arrive one day before the Machame climb?+
Yes we strongly recommend arriving one day early to rest and prepare. We arrange pre-climb accommodation in Moshi.
Do I need travel insurance?+
Yes, travel insurance is mandatory. Your policy must cover high-altitude trekking up to 6,000m, emergency evacuation by helicopter, and trip cancellation. We recommend World Nomads, Allianz, or AXA for climbers. Please bring a copy of your policy to the briefing.
Can vegetarians join the climb?+
Absolutely. We cater to all dietary requirements including vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, and gluten-free. Our mountain cooks are experienced in preparing nutritious and tasty plant-based meals at altitude. Just let us know your dietary needs at the time of booking.
Can I store my luggage in Moshi during the climb?+
Yes, free luggage storage is included. You can leave your main suitcase at our Moshi office during the trek. We recommend packing a separate duffel for the mountain (15kg max per person, carried by porters) and leaving the rest in secure storage.
What is the toilet situation on the mountain?+
On the Machame Route, each hut has flush toilets (though simple). Along the trail, there are public pit latrines at designated rest points. We recommend bringing a small pack of tissues and hand sanitiser. Summit night has no toilet facilities — plan accordingly.
How do I pay the remaining balance?+
After the 30% deposit, you can pay the balance via bank transfer, credit card (Visa/Mastercard/Amex), PayPal, or cryptocurrency. Payment schedules are flexible — we’ll work with you to find a plan that suits your needs.
What happens if I get altitude sickness?+
Our guides are trained in wilderness first-aid and carry emergency oxygen and a pulse oximeter to monitor your blood oxygen levels. If symptoms become severe, the guide will escort you down immediately — the best treatment for altitude sickness is descent. We carry emergency rescue insurance for helicopter evacuation if needed.
Can I extend my trip with a safari or Zanzibar?+
Yes! Many climbers combine their Kilimanjaro climb with a Tanzania safari (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire) or a beach holiday in Zanzibar. We offer discounted package deals — ask our team for a combined itinerary quote.
