Extra day for acclimatisation means 85% summit success on the Whiskey Route.
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
5-7 hrs
Begin at Machame Gate (1,640m) in lush montane rainforest. Known as the Whiskey Route this is the most scenic path up Kilimanjaro with towering trees twisted vines and the earthy scent of wet moss.
The trail climbs steadily through the forest crossing wooden bridges over rushing streams. Blue monkeys and colourful turacos inhabit the canopy. The path is steeper and muddier than Marangu.
Machame Camp at 2,850m sits on a small plateau amidst the trees. Your support crew has tents ready. Hot dinner in the mess tent as darkness falls.
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
5-7 hrs
The forest thins giving way to heath and moorland. The trail emerges onto the vast Shira Plateau a volcanic caldera offering your first expansive views of the mountain.
You leave the trees behind and enter rolling hills of volcanic rock. The sun beats down fiercely. Drink water constantly and apply sunscreen. The views of Kibo grow more impressive with every step.
Shira Camp (3,840m) offers spectacular sunset views over the plains below. Hot carbohydrate-rich dinner in the mess tent.
Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
7-8 hrs
Crucial acclimatisation day following climb high sleep low. You head to Lava Tower (4,640m) a 150-metre volcanic plug. The terrain is alpine desert loose scree and thin air.
After a rest at the base you descend into the lush Barranco Valley. The descent is a relief after the high altitude.
Barranco Camp (3,960m) sits in the shadow of the massive Barranco Wall. The valley is lush with giant groundsels. Among the most photogenic scenery on the entire route.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
4-5 hrs
Morning begins with the Breakfast Wall the Barranco Wall. Despite appearances it is a non-technical scramble requiring hands for balance in a few sections.
The climb takes about an hour. The reward at the top is stunning views of Kibo southern glaciers. The trail then undulates across the Karanga Valley.
Karanga Camp (4,035m) is the last water point before the summit. The afternoon is for rest and final preparation for summit night.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
4-5 hrs
Short but important day climbing steadily to Barafu Camp the high camp at 4,673m. The landscape is stark alpine desert rocks and scree.
Barafu means ice in Swahili. The camp is perched on a rocky ridge with no vegetation. Your tent is set up on sloping ground.
After an early dinner you try to sleep from around 6 PM to 11 PM. Your guide wakes you at midnight with hot tea for the summit attempt.
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Barafu Camp
10-12 hrs
Midnight summit push. The trail ahead is a line of tiny lights other climbers moving towards the same goal. The climb to Stella Point is the toughest section.
Six hours of switchbacks up steep scree. Guides maintain morale with quiet encouragement. Temperatures around -15C with wind chill.
Dawn breaks as you approach Stella Point (5,756m). From here it is one hour along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The highest point in Africa. Descent back to Barafu for a well-earned rest.
Barafu Camp to Mweka Gate
5-7 hrs
The final descent through the lush Mweka Forest. The trail is steep and often muddy. Take care on the slippery sections.
The air grows warmer and thicker with every kilometre. You shed layers as the forest envelops you. Bird calls and the rustle of monkeys accompany you down.
At Mweka Gate you sign out and receive your summit certificate. Your driver takes you back to Moshi for a hot shower and celebration dinner.
