The Lemosho Route is the only path on Kilimanjaro with hut accommodation — meaning you sleep in a bunk bed inside a mountain hut rather than a tent. London Gate to Forest Camp
3-4 hrs
Begin the Premium Route at London Gate. Walk through lush rainforest with towering trees and abundant wildlife.
The trail is gentle and peaceful. Your first taste of Kilimanjaro beauty.
Forest Camp (2,800m) in a forest clearing. Tents set up by your crew.
Forest Camp to Shira Camp One
5-7 hrs
Emerge onto the vast Shira Plateau. The view of Kibo rising above the caldera is breathtaking.
Walk across one of the highest volcanic calderas in the world with views of Mount Meru.
Shira Camp One (3,550m) offers panoramic sunset views over Africa.
Shira Camp One to Shira Camp Two
3-5 hrs
Short day traversing the upper plateau. Excellent for acclimatisation.
The western glaciers of Kibo dominate the view. The landscape feels otherworldly.
Shira Camp Two (3,850m). Afternoon rest and optional acclimatisation hike.
Shira Camp Two to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
6-8 hrs
Climb to Lava Tower (4,640m) for altitude exposure then descend to the lush Barranco Valley.
The contrast between the alpine desert at Lava Tower and the green Barranco Valley is striking.
Barranco Camp surrounded by giant groundsels. One of the most beautiful campsites on the route.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
4-5 hrs
Scramble up the Barranco Wall a fun non-technical climb with stunning views from the top.
Descend into the Karanga Valley and climb to Karanga Camp. Views of the southern glaciers.
Karanga Camp (4,035m). Last water point. Afternoon rest and summit preparation.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
4-5 hrs
Short but important climb to Barafu Camp the high camp at 4,673m.
The landscape is stark alpine desert. Barafu means ice in Swahili.
Early dinner and early bedtime. Your guide wakes you at midnight for the summit push.
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
12-16 hrs
Midnight summit push up steep scree to Stella Point. The guides sing softly to keep morale high.
Dawn breaks as you reach the crater rim. Walk along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
You are standing on the Roof of Africa. Descent to Mweka Camp through the rainforest.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi
3-4 hrs
Final descent through lush Mweka rainforest. Steep and muddy sections.
Sign out at Mweka Gate and receive summit certificates. Transfer to Moshi.
