Machame Gate to Machame Camp
5-7 hrs
Begin at Machame Gate in lush rainforest. The trail climbs steadily through towering trees and twisted vines. Blue monkeys and turacos inhabit the canopy.
The path is steeper than other routes crossing wooden bridges over streams. Your guide sets a sustainable pace.
Machame Camp (2,850m) is a forest clearing where tents await. Hot dinner in the mess tent.
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
5-7 hrs
The forest thins to moorland as you emerge onto the Shira Plateau. The views of Kibo become more dramatic with every step.
The trail crosses rolling hills of volcanic rock. The sun is intense at this elevation. Drink plenty of water.
Shira Camp (3,840m) on the plateau edge offers spectacular sunset views. Hot dinner and early briefing.
Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
7-8 hrs
Climb high sleep low day. Ascend to Lava Tower (4,640m) for altitude exposure then descend to Barranco Valley.
The terrain is alpine desert. After reaching Lava Tower you descend into the green Barranco Valley.
Barranco Camp (3,960m) beneath the Barranco Wall. Giant senecios surround the camp. Incredible photography opportunities.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
4-5 hrs
Climb the famous Barranco Wall a non-technical scramble with stunning views at the top. The wall looks intimidating but is manageable.
The trail then undulates through the Karanga Valley crossing small streams.
Karanga Camp (4,035m) is the last water point before summit. Afternoon rest and preparation.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
4-5 hrs
Short climb to Barafu Camp the high camp at 4,673m. The landscape is stark alpine desert.
Barafu means ice in Swahili. The camp is exposed on a rocky ridge. Basic facilities.
Early dinner and early bedtime. Midnight wake-up for the summit attempt.
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
12-16 hrs
Midnight summit push. Six hours of relentless switchbacks up steep scree to Stella Point (5,756m).
Dawn breaks as you reach the crater rim. From Stella Point walk along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
You have reached the highest point in Africa. Descent to Mweka Camp through the rainforest. Long day but unforgettable.
Mweka Camp Rest Day
Rest Day
A well-earned rest day at Mweka Camp in the lush rainforest. Recover your strength after the summit push.
Share stories with your group enjoy the sounds of the forest and give your muscles time to recover.
Your guide presents your green certificate for reaching Gilmans Point or gold for Uhuru Peak.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi
3-4 hrs
Final short descent through the lush Mweka rainforest. The trail is steep and muddy in places.
At Mweka Gate you sign out and receive certificates. Transfer back to Moshi.
Celebrate your achievement with a hot shower and cold beer. You conquered Kilimanjaro.
