London Gate to Forest Camp
3-4 hrs
Begin at London Gate on the western side. The Lemosho is widely considered the most beautiful route on Kilimanjaro.
Trek through lush rainforest with towering trees and abundant birdlife. The trail is peaceful and uncrowded.
Forest Camp (2,800m) is a peaceful forest clearing. Dinner served in the mess tent.
Forest Camp to Shira Camp One
5-7 hrs
Emerge from the forest onto the vast Shira Plateau. The transition from rainforest to moorland is breathtaking.
Walk across the plateau with views of Mount Meru and the Great Rift Valley. Giant lobelias dot the landscape.
Shira Camp One (3,550m) offers panoramic views. The sunset over Africa is unforgettable.
Shira Camp One to Shira Camp Two
3-5 hrs
Short acclimatisation day traversing the upper plateau. Gentle terrain with spectacular views.
The western glaciers of Kibo come into full view. The landscape is otherworldly.
Shira Camp Two (3,850m) offers stunning sunset views. Early evening to rest and prepare.
Shira Camp Two to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
6-8 hrs
Climb high sleep low day to Lava Tower (4,640m). The terrain becomes alpine desert.
After reaching Lava Tower descend into the lush Barranco Valley with its giant groundsels.
Barranco Camp (3,960m) is surrounded by unique vegetation. The Barranco Wall looms above.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
4-5 hrs
Climb the Barranco Wall in the morning. It looks intimidating but is a fun non-technical scramble.
Descend into the Karanga Valley and climb to Karanga Camp. The views of the southern glaciers are stunning.
Karanga Camp (4,035m) is the last water point. Afternoon rest and summit preparation.
Karanga Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
14-16 hrs
Move to Barafu Camp for a short rest then begin the midnight summit push.
Six hours of switchbacks to Stella Point (5,756m) then one hour along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak.
Summit success at 5,895m. Descent to Mweka Camp through the rainforest. Long but triumphant day.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi
3-4 hrs
Final short descent through lush rainforest. Steep and muddy in places.
Sign out at Mweka Gate and receive summit certificates. Transfer to Moshi.
Celebrate your achievement on the Premium Route.
