Northern Circuit — The Grand 360° Traverse

The Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro's longest and quietest route — a near-complete circumnavigation of Kibo offering almost 360 degrees of scenery, including the rarely visited northern slopes that no other route touches.

It begins at Londorossi Gate, crossing the Shira Plateau to Moir Hut, then turns where all other routes turn south: circling clockwise beneath Lent Hills to Buffalo Camp, traversing the remote northern flanks past Third Cave, and rising over the Saddle to School Hut — the mountain's highest camp at around 4,750 metres. Summit night approaches via Gilman's Point and Stella Point to Uhuru Peak, with descent down the Mweka route.

Up here the mountain empties completely. Days pass without meeting another party; eland and buffalo wander the high valleys; on clear mornings the plains of Kenya and Amboseli spread out below. Roughly 90 kilometres of walking buy the fullest Kilimanjaro there is.

Ten Nights of Remote Tented Camps

Ten nights trace the great arc: forest camp, Shira One and Two, Moir Hut valley, Buffalo Camp, Third Cave, School Hut, and the Mweka descent camps — plus Moshi hotel nights either side. Several of these camps see so few visitors that your group may be the only tents in the valley.

School Hut to Uhuru via Gilman's Point

Summit night leaves School Hut around midnight — the highest launch camp on Kilimanjaro — climbing past Hans Meyer Cave to Gilman's Point at 5,681 metres on the crater rim, usually at sunrise. The rim walk continues via Stella Point at 5,756 metres to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet).

The green certificate marks Gilman's, the gold marks Uhuru. Then the great descent of the Mweka route: thousands of vertical metres through every ecological zone back to the gate.
