The Umbwe Route is the only path on Kilimanjaro with hut accommodation — meaning you sleep in a bunk bed inside a mountain hut rather than a tent. Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp
5-7 hrs
Begin at Umbwe Gate on the most direct route up Kilimanjaro. The trail climbs steeply through dense rainforest from the start.
The path is narrow and steep. This is a serious mountaineering challenge for experienced trekkers.
Umbwe Camp (2,940m) on a steep ridge. Basic camp with stunning views.
Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp
5-7 hrs
Climb onto a spectacular narrow ridge with dramatic drops on both sides. The views are breathtaking and terrifying.
Above the treeline into moorland with giant groundsels. Join the Machame Route near Barranco Camp.
Barranco Camp (3,960m) in the valley of giant senecios. The Barranco Wall for tomorrow.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
4-5 hrs
Scramble the Barranco Wall. Non-technical but exposed in sections.
Descend into the Karanga Valley and climb to Karanga Camp.
Karanga Camp (4,035m). Last water point. Rest and prepare.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
4-5 hrs
Climb to Barafu Camp (4,673m). Stark alpine desert landscape.
Exposed camp on rocky ridge. Barafu means ice.
Early dinner. Midnight summit wake-up. Organise gear.
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
12-16 hrs
Midnight summit push to Stella Point and Uhuru Peak.
Dawn at the crater rim. Highest point in Africa via the hardest route.
Descent to Mweka Camp through the rainforest. Exhausted but triumphant.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi
3-4 hrs
Final descent through lush Mweka rainforest. Steep and muddy sections.
Sign out at Mweka Gate. Receive summit certificates. Transfer to Moshi.
