Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Day Hike
Experience the highest and longest day hike on Mount Kilimanjaro. Walk through pristine rainforest and moorland to Shira 1 Camp (3,500m) on the remote Northern Circuit trail. Diverse terrain, true solitude, and unforgettable views.
About This Day Hike
The Northern Circuit Day Hike is the ultimate single-day Kilimanjaro experience for adventure seekers. Starting at Londorossi Gate (2,100m) on the remote western side of the mountain, this trail reaches Shira 1 Camp (3,500m) — the highest elevation achieved by any day hike on Kilimanjaro. The 14 km round trip takes you through three distinct ecological zones: pristine montane rainforest, heath, and lower moorland.
What makes the Northern Circuit unique is its combination of remoteness and elevation gain. You traverse diverse terrain that multi-day climbers take days to cover, condensed into a single challenging but rewarding day. The trail follows the same route used by Northern Circuit summit climbers, crossing the Londorossi rainforest before emerging into the heath zone with its characteristic giant lobelias and senecios. On clear days, the views of Kibo's glaciers from the moorland section are breathtaking.
This hike is for those who want the most comprehensive day hike experience possible — more elevation, more distance, more diverse terrain, and fewer crowds than any other day option.
Why You'll Love This Hike
Highest Day Hike on Kilimanjaro
Reach 3,500m at Shira 1 Camp — higher than any other day hike on the mountain. Experience the thrill of alpine moorland in a single day.
Longest Day Hike Distance
Cover 14 km round trip through three distinct ecological zones. The longest single-day hike available on Kilimanjaro.
Diverse Terrain Experience
From dense rainforest to open heath and moorland — experience the mountain's changing landscape in just one day.

The least-crowded day hike on Kilimanjaro. The Northern Circuit's remote location means you'll likely have the trail to yourself.

Spectacular Views
On clear days, enjoy panoramic views of Kibo's glaciers from the moorland. The contrast between green forest and alpine landscape is unforgettable.
What It Feels Like to Walk This Trail
Close your eyes and imagine — this is what the Northern Circuit Day Hike actually feels like.
The earliest pickup of all our day hikes — 5:30 AM — sets the tone for this ambitious adventure. As you drive west through the dark, the first light of dawn catches Kilimanjaro's silhouette. The 90-minute drive to Londorossi Gate feels like a journey to the edge of the world. When you arrive, the gate is quiet, the air is cool, and the forest awaits.
The trail begins in deep rainforest, much like the other western routes, but with a difference — you're not stopping at the forest edge. The path continues climbing beyond the typical day hike turnaround, emerging from the tree canopy into the heath zone. This transition is spectacular: the moss-draped podocarpus trees give way to dwarf shrubs, giant heather, and the first views of the open sky. The air becomes thinner, cooler, and carries the scent of alpine plants.
As you ascend into the lower moorland, the trail becomes more exposed and the views expand dramatically. Kibo's icy summit appears above the undulating landscape. Giant groundsels (senecios) and lobelias dot the hillsides, their unusual silhouettes creating an almost otherworldly scene. Your guide will point out endemic species and explain how these plants survive the harsh conditions. At 3,500m, you reach Shira 1 Camp — the turnaround point. Standing at this elevation after a single day's hike is an achievement few Kilimanjaro visitors can claim.
The descent retraces your steps through all three zones, each looking different in the afternoon light. The moorland glows golden, the heath zone casts long shadows, and the rainforest envelops you once more in its green twilight. By the time you reach Londorossi Gate, you've experienced more of Kilimanjaro in one day than most hikers do in three.
Everything About Northern Circuit
The Northern Circuit on Kilimanjaro's western and northern slopes is the longest route to the summit and the most remote day hike experience.
Londorossi Gate (2,100m)
The remote western entry point to Kilimanjaro National Park. Far less busy than other gates, this is where the adventure truly begins. Our guides recommend arriving early to enjoy the quiet morning atmosphere.
Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)
The turnaround point for our day hike and the first overnight camp for Northern Circuit summit climbers. Situated in the lower moorland zone with views of Kibo and the Shira Plateau.
Rainforest Zone (2,100m–2,800m)
Dense, pristine montane rainforest with towering podocarpus trees, moss-draped branches, and abundant wildlife including colobus monkeys and endemic birds.
Heath & Moorland Zone (2,800m–3,500m)
Dwarf shrubs, giant heather, and the iconic senecio and lobelia plants. This zone offers spectacular views and the transition from forest to alpine landscape.
UNESCO World Heritage Site
Kilimanjaro National Park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. The entire park, including the Northern Circuit, is protected for its outstanding natural value.
Geology & Volcano
Kilimanjaro is a stratovolcano formed over 1 million years ago. The Northern Circuit traverses the western and northern flanks, offering unique geological features and ancient lava formations.
Climate & Weather
The Northern Circuit spans multiple climate zones. The rainforest is warm and humid (14–27°C), while the moorland is notably cooler (5–15°C) with wind exposure. Early starts are essential.
Chagga Culture
The area surrounding the western approach is home to the Chagga people, known for their ancient farming traditions on Kilimanjaro's fertile slopes.
Day Hike Itinerary
A full day exploring Kilimanjaro's most diverse terrain. From rainforest to moorland and back.
Moshi to Londorossi Gate
90 min drive
Your guide picks you up from your Moshi hotel at 5:30 AM — the earliest pickup of any day hike, necessary for this ambitious route. The scenic drive takes you west through coffee plantations, banana groves, and traditional Chagga villages. As dawn breaks, the mountain reveals itself in the morning light.
At Londorossi Gate, your guide handles park registration while you enjoy the quiet atmosphere. The gate is typically uncrowded at this hour, and the forest sounds provide a peaceful welcome.
Londorossi Gate to Shira 1 Camp
4–5 hrs
The trail begins in pristine montane rainforest. Towering podocarpus trees dominate the canopy, their trunks draped in usnea moss. Your guide leads at a steady pace, pointing out wildlife and explaining the ecology. The first section is in deep forest with a well-graded trail.
Around the 2,800m mark, the forest begins to thin and you enter the heath zone. This transition is one of the most dramatic moments on the trail — the canopy opens and the mountain reveals itself. Giant heather and dwarf shrubs replace the tall trees, and the views expand dramatically.
The final section crosses the lower moorland to reach Shira 1 Camp at 3,500m. The landscape here is dominated by giant groundsels (senecios) and lobelias, creating an almost otherworldly scene. On clear days, Kibo's glaciers loom ahead, providing an unforgettable backdrop for your lunch stop.
Shira 1 Camp to Londorossi Gate to Moshi
3–4 hrs
After a rest and picnic lunch at Shira 1 Camp, you begin your descent. The return journey passes through all three zones in reverse, each looking different in the afternoon light. The moorland glows warmly, the heath zone casts long shadows, and the rainforest envelops you once more in its cool, green embrace.
Arrive at Londorossi Gate in the late afternoon. Your guide signs you out of the park before the 90-minute transfer back to Moshi, arriving at your hotel by approximately 5:00–6:00 PM.
The rest of the evening is yours to relax, recount the day's adventures, and prepare for your next Tanzania experience.
Diverse Ecosystems Guide
The Northern Circuit trail passes through three distinct ecological zones, each with its own unique flora and fauna.
Colobus Monkeys
The rainforest section is home to troops of black-and-white colobus monkeys. Their flowing white tails and acrobatic leaps between branches are a highlight of the lower trail.
Hartlaub's Turaco
This vibrant bird with glossy green, purple, and red plumage is commonly seen in the rainforest zone. Its distinctive calls echo through the trees.
Giant Lobelias & Senecios
The moorland zone is famous for its giant groundsels (senecios) and lobelias — unique plants adapted to the harsh alpine conditions. Some specimens are decades old.
Rainforest Flora
Towering podocarpus and camphor trees dominate the rainforest. Orchids, ferns, and mosses create a lush understorey with remarkable biodiversity.
Moorland Birds
The upper reaches are home to alpine birds including the mountain chat, alpine swift, and occasionally augur buzzards soaring on thermals.
Blue Monkeys & Bushbuck
Blue monkeys travel in family groups through the mid-canopy, while bushbuck (small antelope) are often spotted near stream crossings in the forest zone.
