Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit 2-Day Short Trek
A remote overnight camping trek on Kilimanjaro's least-crowded route. Hike from Londorossi Gate through forest and moorland to Shira 1 Camp at 3,500m — spectacular scenery, wilderness, and solitude await.
About This Day Hike
The Northern Circuit 2-Day Short Trek is Kilimanjaro's most remote overnight experience. Starting at Londorossi Gate (2,100m) on the western side of the mountain, you'll hike through wild and beautiful forest to Forest Camp (2,800m), then continue via the Moir Hut trail to Shira 1 Camp (3,500m) on the vast Shira Plateau. You'll camp overnight in a dome tent with spectacular views of Kibo peak before descending back through the remote moorland to Londorossi Gate on Day 2.
This is the least crowded 2-day trek on Kilimanjaro. The Northern Circuit route sees a fraction of the traffic of Marangu or Machame, giving you a genuine wilderness experience. You'll walk through pristine montane forest, open moorland, and the dramatic Shira Plateau landscape.
Our guides were born on the slopes of Kilimanjaro and know every hidden corner of the Northern Circuit. The camping experience at Shira 1 Camp is unforgettable — falling asleep to the sound of wind across the moorland under some of the darkest skies in Tanzania.
Why You'll Love This Trek
Overnight at Shira 1 Camp
Camp at 3,500m on the vast Shira Plateau under incredible night skies. Dome tent, dining tent, camp chairs — a true wilderness camping experience with views of Kibo peak.
Pristine Forest & Moorland
Hike through untouched montane rainforest on Day 1, then ascend into the open moorland zone on Day 2. Two completely different ecosystems in one trek.
Extreme Solitude
The Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro's least crowded route. You will likely encounter zero other hikers on the trail. Total wilderness immersion.
Abundant Wildlife
The remote trail is rich with wildlife — colobus and blue monkeys in the forest, birds of prey over the moorland, and unique high-altitude flora.
Shira Plateau Views
The Shira Plateau at 3,500m offers breathtaking panoramic views of Kibo peak, Mount Meru in the distance, and the wild western landscape.
Incredible Photography
From the moss-draped rainforest to the golden moorland at sunset — this trek offers some of the most diverse photo opportunities on Kilimanjaro.
What It Feels Like to Walk This Trail
Close your eyes and imagine — this is what the Northern Circuit 2-Day Short Trek actually feels like.
The drive alone is an adventure — winding through Chagga villages and coffee plantations to the remote Londorossi Gate on the western boundary of Kilimanjaro National Park. When you arrive, the silence is striking. No tour buses, no crowds. Just the sound of the forest and the wind. The air carries the scent of damp earth and wild herbs.
Day 1 takes you through pristine montane rainforest — wide, wild trails beneath towering podocarpus trees draped in moss. You'll walk for several hours, crossing streams via log bridges, to reach Forest Camp at 2,800m. The afternoon light through the canopy is magical, creating a cathedral-like atmosphere. After a packed lunch, you'll continue your ascent out of the forest zone and into the open moorland, where views begin to open up dramatically.
On Day 2, you wake to the silence of the Shira Plateau at 3,500m — a vast, ancient volcanic landscape. The trail from Shira 1 Camp traverses open moorland with giant lobelias and senecio plants. The views of Kibo peak across the plateau are nothing short of spectacular. After breakfast, you'll begin the descent through the ever-changing landscapes back to Londorossi Gate.
By the time you return to Moshi, you'll feel like you've discovered a side of Kilimanjaro that most visitors never see — quiet, wild, and utterly unforgettable. The camping under the stars at 3,500m will stay with you long after you've left Tanzania.
Everything About the Northern Circuit
The Northern Circuit on Kilimanjaro's remote western and northern slopes is renowned for its pristine wilderness, solitude, and dramatic landscapes.
Londorossi Gate (2,100m)
The remote western entry point to Kilimanjaro National Park. Far less busy than Marangu Gate, the atmosphere here is peaceful and the trail begins immediately in pristine rainforest.
Forest Camp (2,800m)
The first campsite in the forest zone on the Northern Circuit. Set among giant podocarpus trees, this is a quiet, wild campsite where the sounds of the forest surround you.
Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)
Located on the vast Shira Plateau, this wilderness campsite offers breathtaking views of Kibo peak. The night sky here is among the clearest and darkest in Tanzania.
Moir Hut Trail
A less-travelled trail that connects the forest zone to the Shira Plateau via Moir Hut. This route is wild, remote, and offers incredible scenery away from the main trails.
UNESCO World Heritage Site
Kilimanjaro National Park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. The Northern Circuit traverses the most remote part of this protected area.
Volcanic Geology
The Shira Plateau is actually the remnant of a volcanic cone that collapsed over 500,000 years ago. The landscape is dramatic — ancient lava flows, volcanic rock formations, and sweeping views.
Alpine Climate
Descending from warm rainforest (14-27°C) to cool alpine moorland (5-15°C) in just two days. The weather on the Shira Plateau is changeable — warm sun, wind, and occasional clouds.
Route History
The Northern Circuit is the newest route on Kilimanjaro, officially opened in 2012. It combines sections of the Lemosho and Rongai routes and is known for offering the most complete circumnavigation experience.
Northern Circuit 2-Day Itinerary
Two days exploring Kilimanjaro's most remote wilderness — from rainforest to moorland plateau with an unforgettable night of camping.
Moshi to Londorossi Gate
90 min driveYour guide picks you up from your Moshi hotel and drives west through beautiful rural landscapes past coffee plantations, banana groves, and traditional Chagga villages. The closer you get to Kilimanjaro's western side, the more remote the landscape becomes.
At Londorossi Gate, your guide handles park registration. The atmosphere here is peaceful — far from the crowds of other gates. Your trek begins right from the gate, winding into pristine rainforest.
Londorossi Gate to Forest Camp (via Moir Hut)
5–6 hrsThe trail winds through pristine montane rainforest with towering podocarpus trees, usnea moss, and ferns. The path climbs steadily through multiple microclimates. Your guide will point out endemic plants, explain the ecosystem, and share stories about life on the mountain.
After emerging from the forest, the trail opens onto the Shira Plateau via the Moir Hut trail. The landscape transforms dramatically — from lush forest to vast, open moorland with giant lobelias and senecio plants. The views of Kibo peak appearing on the horizon are breathtaking.
Arrive at Shira 1 Camp (3,500m) in the late afternoon. Your tent will be set up, and you can relax in the camp chairs while the cook prepares dinner. The sunset over the Shira Plateau is one of the most spectacular sights on Kilimanjaro.
Shira 1 Camp to Londorossi Gate to Moshi
4–5 hrsWake early to watch sunrise over Kibo from the Shira Plateau. After a hot breakfast, pack up camp and begin your descent. The walk back through the moorland offers a different perspective in the morning light, with the Shira Plateau glowing golden.
Retrace your route back through the forest zone to Londorossi Gate. The descent is faster and you'll notice details you missed on the way up. Afternoon light through the rainforest creates a magical atmosphere. Arrive at Londorossi Gate where your driver awaits.
Transfer back to Moshi, arriving at your hotel by approximately 4:00–5:00 PM. The rest of the evening is yours to relax, explore Moshi town, or prepare for your next Tanzania adventure.
Rainforest & Moorland Wildlife Guide
The Northern Circuit trail traverses two distinct ecosystems — lush montane rainforest and the high-altitude moorland of the Shira Plateau — each with unique wildlife.
Colobus & Blue Monkeys
The forest section is home to troops of black-and-white colobus monkeys and blue monkeys. Our guides know the exact trees where they feed — typically near the stream crossings around the 3km mark.
Moorland Birds
Once above the treeline, look for augur buzzards, ravens, and the distinctive white-necked raven soaring over the Shira Plateau. The open landscape makes birdwatching exceptionally rewarding.
Giant Podocarpus Forest
The rainforest section features enormous podocarpus trees, some over 40 metres tall, draped in usnea moss. This creates a fairy-tale atmosphere unique to the remote western slopes.
Giant Lobelias & Senecio
The moorland zone is home to unique giant rosette plants — lobelias and groundsels (senecio) that grow only on East African mountains. These bizarre, alien-looking plants are a highlight of the Shira Plateau.
Bushbuck & Dik-dik
Small antelope like bushbuck and dik-dik are frequently spotted in the forest zone. Our guides know the best spots — the stream crossing at the 2,300m mark is a reliable location for sightings.
Hartlaub's Turaco
This vibrant bird with glossy green-and-purple plumage and a bright red beak is common in the forest section. The remote nature of the Northern Circuit means you'll see more birds than on busier routes.

Well-Graded Trail
The trail is well-maintained with a steady incline through forest and moorland. No scrambling or technical sections. The main challenge is the altitude gain to 3,500m.
Moderate Fitness Needed

Who This Trek Is For & Who It's Not For
We believe in honest advice. This trek is perfect for some travellers — but not everyone. Here's the truth.
Perfect For You If…
- You want a remote, uncrowded Kilimanjaro experience
- You're excited to camp overnight at 3,500m on the Shira Plateau
- You love diverse landscapes — rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert
- You're a photographer seeking wild, dramatic scenery
- You want to experience Northern Circuit, Kilimanjaro's least-visited route
- You're looking for a 2-day wilderness adventure from Moshi
- You want to test your fitness at altitude before a full summit climb
- You value solitude and the sound of silence
Not Ideal If You Want…
- To reach the summit of Kilimanjaro (5,895m) — that's a multi-day climb
- A short, easy hike — this is a sustained 2-day trek with altitude
- The shortest drive from Moshi — Northern Circuit is 90 min vs 45 min for Marangu
- Luxury accommodation — camping is basic but comfortable
- Wildlife like lions, elephants, or the Big Five — that's a safari
- Swimming — consider Materuni Waterfalls or Chemka Hot Springs
- A single-day trip — consider the Marangu or Machame day hikes
- To avoid all altitude effects — stay below 2,800m with a day hike

Stories From the Trail
Our guides have led the Northern Circuit 2-Day Trek many times. Here's what they want you to know.
"I've guided on every route of Kilimanjaro, and the Northern Circuit is my favourite for overnight treks. The feeling of solitude you get camping at Shira 1 Camp is unmatched. There's something special about waking up at 3,500m with Kibo right in front of you and not a single other person in sight."
"What I love about the Northern Circuit is the journey through two worlds — the dense, green rainforest on the first day and the open, golden moorland of the Shira Plateau on the second. The sunset from camp is something I never get tired of. My guests often tell me it was the most peaceful night of their entire trip."
"Growing up near the western side of Kilimanjaro, I've always loved the quiet places. The Northern Circuit has a special kind of silence — no generators, no crowds, no noise. Just the wind across the moorland and the crackling of the campfire. It's authentic wilderness, and it changes how people see Kilimanjaro."
What Our Trekkers Say

Our guide was knowledgeable and the camping setup was very comfortable. Highly recommend for anyone wanting a real wilderness experience."
"We were the only people on the trail both days. The silence at Shira 1 Camp was surreal — just the wind and the vastness of the plateau. The walk through the rainforest on Day 1 was beautiful, but emerging onto the moorland and seeing Kibo for the first time took my breath away."
"As a photographer, the Northern Circuit was a dream. The light at sunset over the Shira Plateau was incredible — golden hour that lasted forever. The forest trail on Day 1 was full of wildlife. Our guide knew exactly where to stop for the best compositions."
